Operations Strategy information

What does an operations strategy do?

An operations strategy defines how a company allocates resources, designs processes, and sets priorities to achieve efficiency, quality, and competitive advantage. It guides decision-making across production, supply chain, and service delivery, often involving tools like process analysis and performance metrics. This strategy aligns operational activities with overall business goals and may require skills in planning, analysis, and continuous improvement.

What is operations strategy?

Operations strategy is the plan that an organization uses to configure its resources and processes to effectively produce goods or deliver services. It aligns the operations function with the overall business strategy, ensuring that the company can meet customer demands efficiently and competitively. This often involves decisions related to production, quality management, supply chain, and resource allocation. Professionals in operations strategy analyze data and trends to optimize performance and drive long-term success for the organization.

Is operations strategy a high paying job?

Operations strategy roles are generally well-compensated, especially at senior levels or in large organizations, with salaries often reflecting experience, industry, and location. Professionals in this field with advanced skills in data analysis, process improvement, and strategic planning tend to earn higher salaries. However, pay can vary widely based on factors such as company size, geographic region, and individual qualifications.

What is the difference between Operations Strategy vs Supply Chain Analyst?

AspectOperations StrategySupply Chain Analyst

Work EnvironmentStrategic planning teams, management meetings, cross-department collaborationData analysis, vendor communication, logistics coordination, office setting
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, retail, logistics companies focusing on overall operationsSupply chain firms, manufacturing, retail, logistics companies focusing on supply chain processes

Operations Strategy focuses on developing and implementing high-level plans to improve overall operational efficiency and effectiveness. In contrast, Supply Chain Analysts concentrate on analyzing and optimizing supply chain processes to ensure smooth logistics and inventory management. Both roles are essential in operations but differ in scope and focus.

How does an operations strategy professional typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive process improvements?

Operations Strategy professionals regularly work alongside departments such as finance, supply chain, marketing, and IT to identify inefficiencies and develop actionable plans for improvement. This collaboration often involves leading workshops, analyzing data with stakeholders, and aligning diverse teams on shared objectives. Effective communication and project management skills are crucial, as these professionals must balance strategic vision with day-to-day operational realities. By fostering strong cross-functional relationships, Operations Strategy professionals ensure that recommended changes are feasible and supported across the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in operations strategy, and why are they important?

To excel in Operations Strategy, you need strong analytical abilities, problem-solving skills, and a background in business, engineering, or a related field, often supported by a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Familiarity with data analytics tools, process improvement methodologies (like Six Sigma), and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems is typically expected. Exceptional communication, leadership, and adaptability help professionals stand out in cross-functional environments. These skills ensure effective operational improvements, strategic decision-making, and the ability to drive organizational growth.

Job description

We require people to be on-site, 4 days/week at our Denver office and are unable to offer relocation support.
The Opportunity
We're seeking a Director of Engineering to lead our Platform & DevOps organization. You will define the platform strategy and oversee a large team delivering secure, reliable, cost-efficient, developer-friendly platforms: CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes/EKS, observability, and security-by-default. You'll set multi-quarter roadmaps and OKRs, own budgets and vendor relationships, and partner closely with Product, Security, Data, and DevOps leadership to create paved roads that accelerate the entire engineering org.
Responsibilities
Org Leadership & Talent
  • Build and lead a large team organization (tech leads and engineers); attract, develop, and retain top talent.
  • Define career ladders, succession plans, and healthy on-call practices; ensure sustainable delivery and team health.
  • Champion a culture of ownership, inclusion, and continuous improvement (blameless postmortems, strategic retention).
Strategy, Portfolio & Governance
  • Own the Platform & DevOps strategy and multi-quarter roadmap; align to company goals and product timelines.
  • Define portfolio governance: intake, prioritization, and trade-offs across security, reliability, developer experience, and cost.
  • Establish org-wide guardrails (golden paths, reference architectures, policy-as-code) enabling autonomy with compliance.
Platform Architecture & Governance
  • Set technical direction for build/release, infrastructure automation, Kubernetes/EKS runtime, and observability.
  • Establish guardrails (golden paths, templates, policy-as-code, org standards) to enable autonomy with compliance.
  • Drive cost, performance, and availability improvements; own platform budgets/forecasts and FinOps practices.
DevOps & Security
  • Standardize CI/CD (GitHub Actions/Jenkins or similar), artifact signing, progressive delivery.
  • Enforce security-by-design: SCA/SAST/DAST in pipelines, secrets management, least-privilege IAM, network segmentation, runtime hardening.
  • Lead remediation SLAs with Security; maintain audit-ready evidence for enterprise standards and regulations.
Cloud Infrastructure & Reliability
  • Direct the design/operations of secure AWS platforms using IaC (Terraform/Pulumi) with drift detection and change controls.
  • Oversee EKS/Kubernetes multi-cluster/multi-region strategy, capacity planning, and resiliency patterns.
  • Define SLOs/error budgets and ensure effective incident response, post-incident learning, and reliability investments.
Communication, Documentation & Change Management
  • Publish clear reference architectures, runbooks, and standards; keep documentation current and discoverable.

Communicate priorities, trade-offs, and status to execs and cross-functional partners; influence with data.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent practical experience
  • 12+ years total experience in Platform/SRE/DevOps/Infrastructure, including 5+ years leading tech leads or multiple teams.
  • Proven track record delivering secure, reliable, cross-team platforms serving many product squads.
  • Experience with SOC2 compliance.
  • Strong Linux, networking, and troubleshooting fundamentals.
  • Proficiency in Python/Bash; automation around CI/CD, infra, and operations.
  • Deep AWS experience (EKS/ECS/EC2/RDS/DocumentDB/DynamoDB, IAM, VPC, security groups) and Kubernetes in AWS.
  • IaC expertise (Terraform preferred; Pulumi a plus) with sound practices (modularity, versioning, policy checks, drift detection).
  • Observability at scale (logs/metrics/traces, alerting design, SLOs) and incident management/command skills.
  • Security leadership across build/deploy/runtime; RBAC/ABAC and identity standards (OAuth, SAML, OIDC); secrets management.
  • Executive communication; portfolio management; budget/FinOps ownership.
Preferred
  • AWS DevOps Engineer - Professional and/or AWS Solutions Architect (Assoc/Pro).
  • Experience with data/streaming platforms (e.g., Databricks/Kafka) or edge/low-latency systems.
  • Vendor consolidation and contract negotiation experience.
