Red Butte Garden & Arboretum (RBGA) is one of the largest botanical gardens in the Intermountain West and, together with the University of Utah, serves as the State Arboretum of Utah. Located on 100 acres in the foothills above the University of Utah campus, Red Butte Garden includes over 21 acres of developed gardens and five miles of natural area trails. The Garden is nationally recognized for its diverse plant collections, seasonal floral displays, outdoor concert series, private event spaces, and awardwinning horticultural education programs.
This position coordinates day-to-day retail operations, staff activities, inventory processes, exhibits, and retail-related programs. The primary focus of the role is staff supervision and the day-to-day operation of the retail program, including training, workflow coordination, inventory processes, and financial recordkeeping. The position also coordinates art gallery exhibits and retail-related events throughout the year. The Retail Supervisor helps establish and maintain practical processes and resources that support consistent workflows, accurate records, and an effective retail team.
This position requires an on-site work schedule due to its responsibilities for daily retail operations, staff supervision, inventory processes, and in-person exhibits and events.

Responsibilities
Staff Supervision & Team Coordination
Supervise part-time retail staff and coordinate daily staff activities.
Create and manage staff schedules to ensure operational coverage.
Coordinate schedule adjustments, staff callouts, and timecard approvals as needed.
Identify daily and recurring operational tasks, establish workflow priorities, and coordinate staff assignments to ensure work is completed consistently.
Provide coaching and day-to-day performance feedback to support staff development and consistent performance.
Participate in hiring and performance management activities in coordination with department leadership.
Oversee daily sales floor operations, including stocking, organization, merchandise presentation, cleanliness, and maintaining a welcoming environment for visitors and guests.
Training & Process Support
Develop and maintain training materials and process documentation for core retail responsibilities and workflows.
Train and onboard staff on retail operations, procedures, systems, and expectations.
Establish and maintain practical processes for recurring retail work, including staff tasks and operational workflows.
Identify opportunities to improve day-to-day processes and coordinate practical improvements with department leadership.
Inventory, Merchandise & Financial Processing
Coordinate merchandise intake from shipment receipt through point-of-sale entry, pricing, and sales floor placement.
Ensure merchandise is accurately received, entered, priced, and prepared for display.
Track shipment discrepancies and coordinate follow-up and resolution.
Establish and maintain a regular cycle-count process to support inventory accuracy.
Research inventory discrepancies, identify recurring issues, and coordinate corrections as needed.
Coordinate invoice processing, payment tracking, and reconciliation with University management reports.
Prepare sales reports and maintain accurate operational records related to retail activities, exhibits, and events.
Coordinate annual physical inventory.
Monitor stock levels and place routine replenishment orders for operational supplies and other assigned items.
Retail Exhibits & Events
Coordinate annual art gallery exhibits from planning through completion, including artist communication, inventory intake, exhibit setup and takedown, sales tracking, reporting, and artist payments.
Coordinate the annual Holiday Open House, including artist communication, event setup and takedown, inventory tracking, sales reporting, and artist payments.
Coordinate additional retail-related events and programs, including plant sales and concerts.
Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:

Supervisor, Retail Operations Management: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience or a master's (or equivalency) degree.
Preferences
Experience supervising or leading staff in a retail, visitor-facing, or operational environment.
Experience with day-to-day retail operations, including inventory management, merchandise receiving, stocking, merchandising, and point-of-sale systems.
Experience organizing recurring work and developing or improving practical processes for staff tasks, inventory control, workflows, or similar operational needs.
Experience training staff and developing clear procedures, instructions, or other practical training resources.
Experience with invoice processing, reconciliation, financial recordkeeping, or related administrative processes.
Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
