What does a great zTPF Platform & Systems Engineering Manager do?

We are seeking a zTPF Platform & Systems Engineering Manager. Our Platform and Systems Engineering teams enhance and maintain the stability of the zTPF complexes by providing high quality technical expertise and delivery for our zTPF platform, operating systems, and database.ย  As zTPF Platform & Systems Engineering Manager, you will work with other Infrastructure Engineering leaders and teams, zTPF Systems Engineers, Hardware Engineers, and Support teams performing daily activities ranging in complexity.ย  You will be responsible for the leadership of teams who design, configure, test, maintain, and operate Travelport's zTPF mainframe infrastructure.ย  You will own and drive work efforts through all stages of the requirements, design, development, quality, and implementation life cycles.ย The successful candidate will be a self-motivated, talented, technical, proactive person who embraces team culture, challenges, problem solving, and has a proven track record of delivering.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead a growing technical team responsible for the zTPF operating system, zTPF file support, and mainframe hardware.ย 
  • Provide functional leadership for critical zTPF operating system, zTPF database, and mainframe platform capabilities, including new functionality, integration of IBM APARs, and maintenance of proprietary operating system modifications and utilities

  • Provide functional leadership of the mainframe hardware configuration (CPU, DASD, VTS, HMC and FICON Directors), inclusive of hardware planning lifecycles, vendor engagement for upgrades, and production support of repair actionsย 

  • Collaborate with domain subject matter experts to identify strategies and align product management roadmaps with priorities and staffing capacity
  • Apply knowledge of software engineering principles and quality concepts in the design, development, and maintenance of multiple components for a diverse family of products
  • Understand integration and impact on adjacent systems, as well as short and long-term impact of technical decisions
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders (architecture, security, application engineering, infrastructure engineering, project management, product, quality, etc.) to ensure solutions meet business requirements, including delivery quality, cost, timelines, and compliance
  • Generate, communicate, and implement ideas to improve systems and/or streamline delivery
  • Responsible for relationship building with key Travelport strategic customers

  • Deliver production support services, including monitoring, troubleshooting, problem resolution, and maintenance including escalation to vendors for service restoration and problem resolution
  • Provide 24x7 on-call availability and support as a point of escalation for team members

Who we are looking for in this role:

  • Proven and currentย experience leading teams that develop, deploy, and support zTPF operating system, zTPF database, and/or zTPF communications functions and associated infrastructure

  • Lead and manage performance of direct reports to create a high performing team and proactively grow capabilities and develop talent. Ensure team goals and commitments are delivered

  • Manage operating model, timelines, budgets, and growth of team members leveraging corporate management tools - i.e. Jira, PPM, OpenBlend, etc.

  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills with ability to communicate technical information in a clear and succinct manner

  • Executive presence and comfortable presenting with all levels of management.ย 
  • Strong negotiation, project management, task delegation, and organizational skills
  • Self-motivated with ability to multi-task and embrace an ever-changing environment, competing priorities, and high expectations

  • Strong desire to spend time with customers and integrate feedback in future work efforts
  • Understanding of IBM software and hardware technologies - architecture, operating systems, database, hardware,ย security, compliance

  • Conceptual understanding of zTPF control program internals and zTPF database management

  • Logical understanding of zSeries hardware - Central Electronics Complexes (CEC), Direct Access Storage Device storage (DASD), Virtual Tape Server storage (VTS), Hardware Maintenance Consoles (HMC), FICON Directors and other peripheral hardware
  • Ability to navigate adjacent systems such as z/VM, z/Linux, and z/OS

  • Knowledge of zTPF development and testing tools, such as zTPFGI, IBM Toolkit, CP trace, z/Linux, maketpf, VPARS, VTAPE

  • Strong technical aptitude with strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Knowledge of ITIL principles and processesย
