Assisted Living Alberta (ALA) is seeking an accomplished healthcare executive to serve as Senior Operating Officer, Provincial Palliative Care, Hospice and End of Life Program and Corridor Lead. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, Clinical Delivery and Operations, this role provides provincial leadership for compassionate, patient- and family-centred palliative, hospice and end-of-life services across Alberta. The Senior Operating Officer (SOO), will implement and lead an integrated provincial clinical service model, balancing consistent program standards with corridor and site-level responsiveness. Accountable for clinical operations, quality, safety, workforce planning, financial stewardship and service continuity, the role will guide 6 direct and 364 indirect reports across diverse care settings. Working in partnership with medical, clinical, operational, quality, planning, contracting and community partners, the SOO will strengthen care coordination, address emerging issues and support timely, seamless transitions for patients, residents and families. The role also serves as a Corridor Lead, providing coordination, representation and issue resolution where a provincial program does not have defined oversight. This is an opportunity to shape a significant provincial program, influence care across the continuum and improve the experiences and outcomes of Albertans receiving palliative and end-of-life care.

Description:

The Senior Operating Officer, Provincial Palliative Care, Hospice and End of Life Program and Corridor Lead provides executive leadership and full operational accountability for provincial palliative, hospice and end-of-life care across all corridors. The role implements a coordinated clinical service model and oversees direct service delivery, case management, care coordination, site operations, provider relationships, staffing, financial resources and regulatory compliance. The SOO works in partnership with a medical leader and leaders across Clinical Delivery and Operations. The role also collaborates closely with Transition and Navigation Services, Planning, Performance and Quality, contracting, and workforce functions to ensure services are integrated, responsive, and aligned with provincial standards. The position monitors outcomes, incidents, complaints, operational performance, and patient and family feedback. These findings are translated into corrective action, program standardization, and continuous improvement. The SOO leads 6 direct and 364 indirect reports, establishes an effective corridor-based leadership structure and advances workforce planning, recruitment, retention and professional development. The role represents ALA on executive committees and with public, private and community partners, develops provincial and national relationships and serves as Corridor Lead for coordination, representation and issue resolution where a program lacks defined oversight.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in a healthcare profession, healthcare management or business administration. A minimum of 7 years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare operations, with significant experience in palliative or end-of-life care. Demonstrated expertise in managing specialized care programs across multiple sites and geographies. Proven ability to lead compassionate, patient-centered care delivery in sensitive clinical contexts. Experience in program standardization and quality improvement in palliative care settings.


Additional Required Qualifications:

Demonstrated experience providing executive leadership and full operational accountability for complex provincial or multi-site healthcare services is required. The successful candidate brings strong knowledge of palliative, hospice and end-of-life care delivery, provincial regulations, professional standards, quality and safety practices and patient and family experience. Proven experience leading large multidisciplinary and unionized teams, workforce planning, financial management, service integration and change implementation is required. The successful candidate demonstrates sound executive judgement, systems thinking and the ability to monitor performance, address emerging risks and complaints and translate data and feedback into sustainable improvement. Experience partnering with medical leaders, operational leaders, service providers, community organizations and executive stakeholders to coordinate care and resolve complex cross-system issues is also required.


Preferred Qualifications:

Certification in palliative care leadership or hospice management. Experience in Alberta's continuing care or palliative care system. Familiarity with national palliative care standards and frameworks.
