What are Operating Executives?

Operating Executives are senior-level professionals responsible for overseeing and improving the day-to-day operations of a company or business unit. They focus on implementing business strategies, optimizing processes, and ensuring operational efficiency to achieve organizational goals. Operating Executives often work closely with other executives, such as CEOs and CFOs, to drive growth, increase profitability, and manage teams across various departments. Their role may also include managing budgets, developing policies, and guiding operational change. They are key players in translating high-level strategy into actionable plans and results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Operating Executive, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Operating Executive, you need strong leadership abilities, strategic business acumen, and a proven track record in operational management, typically supported by an advanced degree such as an MBA. Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, financial modeling tools, and industry-specific certifications like Six Sigma are commonly required. Exceptional communication, decision-making, and change management skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies are crucial for optimizing business operations, driving growth, and successfully leading organizations through complex challenges.

What are some common challenges Operating Executives face when working with portfolio companies?

Operating Executives often encounter challenges such as aligning diverse management teams with new strategic objectives, implementing operational improvements across varied industries, and driving change within tight timelines. They must quickly assess existing processes, identify gaps, and build trust with internal leaders to execute transformation initiatives. Strong communication and adaptability are essential, as this role frequently involves balancing the expectations of private equity partners with the realities faced by portfolio company teams.

Job description

ROLE SUMMARY

The Intersect Group is seeking an IT Portfolio Manager to lead a pillar portfolio of enterprise technology initiatives and serve as a trusted advisor to senior IT leadership. This role operates at the portfolio level, turning delivery complexity into decision ready insights, clear recommendations, and actionable outcomes that protect executive time and drive follow through.

In this role, you will own portfolio shaping, prioritization, financial stewardship, and executive decision enablement. Success is achieved through influence rather than authority, orchestrating work across PMO and non PMO efforts, translating execution into clarity for leadership, and ensuring commitments result in delivered value.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Own and manage a pillar level portfolio of enterprise initiatives from intake through outcomes, maintaining a single executive ready source of truth
• Prepare concise executive pre reads and decision packets with clear recommendations, options, risks, tradeoffs, and decision requirements
• Serve as a day to day portfolio advisor to senior IT leadership, running portfolio cadences and decision agendas
• Drive intake discipline by ensuring initiatives are defined with outcomes, sponsors, business cases, costs, capacity assumptions, and approvals
• Facilitate prioritization and sequencing based on value, strategic alignment, dependencies, fiscal timing, and capacity
• Identify and manage cross initiative dependencies, risks, and resource constraints, escalating with mitigation and decision options
• Translate portfolio, financial, and delivery data into plain language insights leaders can act on quickly
• Track value delivery and benefits realization, recommending course corrections, de scopes, or stops when value is at risk

KEY REQUIREMENTS

• 8 to 12 years of experience in IT portfolio management, PMO leadership, or enterprise program environments
• Proven experience supporting VP and CIO level leaders with executive decision packets and governance cadences
• Strong expertise in portfolio prioritization, sequencing, dependency management, and capacity based planning
• Demonstrated financial stewardship including budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and funding tradeoffs
• Experience working across infrastructure, applications, security, data, and vendor led initiatives
• Exceptional executive communication skills with the ability to synthesize complex detail into clear recommendations
• Strong influence skills and the ability to operate effectively without direct authority
• Highly organized, disciplined, and proactive with strong stakeholder management capabilities

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• PMP, PgMP, or PfMP certification
• Experience building and operating executive facing portfolio dashboards and KPI frameworks
• Background in large scale enterprise or matrixed environments
• Track record of improving portfolio processes, simplifying governance, and increasing adoption
