Position Summary

The Onsite Engineer / Service Technician is responsible for installing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing equipment or systems at customer or project sites. This role is a hybrid position, with approximately 50% of the time spent in the field/truck-based work and 50% spent working on-site at project locations to ensure equipment performance, resolve technical issues, and support project completion. The ideal candidate has strong technical skills, the ability to diagnose problems in real time, and a commitment to delivering high-quality service while maintaining safety standards.

Role Responsibilities

  • Perform HVAC/R mechanical service activities, effective customer communication, diagnosis, and repair of industrial and commercial equipment.
  • Perform planned maintenance tasks as prescribed for HVAC, mechanical, and associated building systems.
  • Perform equipment start-up with associated documentation.
  • Perform quality control inspections on RK Service work when assigned.
  • Provide technical troubleshooting and diagnostics for HVAC, BAS, and related mechanical systems when needed.
  • Monitor, operate, and make minor adjustments to building automation, HVAC, ventilation, and temperature control systems to maintain occupant comfort and system performance.
  • Perform routine on-site building rounds to identify deficiencies, operating issues, safety concerns, and corrective maintenance needs.
  • Respond to tenant, owner, and customer service requests in a timely and professional manner.
  • Support daily facility operations including filter changes, belt replacement, lubrication, minor plumbing and drain support, lighting and electrical coordination, and general mechanical room housekeeping.
  • Maintain operating logs, service records, inspection documentation, and site-specific maintenance documentation as required.
  • Coordinate with the Customer Services department, account management, site contacts, and vendors regarding work status, priorities, and follow-up needs.
  • Make service-related decisions in a timely manner that are in the best interest of the company and the customer.
  • Follow up on callbacks, open work orders, and completion of jobs.
  • Call for inspections when asked or when the job requires, meet with inspectors, and help ensure work passes required inspections.
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of RK Service technicians and other assigned field staff.
  • Guide field staff in properly completing specialized forms required and assist in providing paperwork to the necessary departments.
  • Assist in pricing with Account Managers or Service Writers when required.
  • Develop lead referrals resulting from service activities for the Sales Department or Service Writer.
  • Coordinate and escort subcontractors and specialty vendors on site when required and verify work is completed in accordance with site expectations.
  • Support owner and occupant training as required.
  • Identify opportunities for improved energy performance, equipment reliability, and preventative maintenance effectiveness.
  • Maintain readiness for emergency response and after-hours support as assigned.
  • Guide field staff in the execution of any or all of the tasks listed above when required by assignment or level.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or technical certification in engineering technology, mechanical, electrical, or related field, or equivalent field experience
  • 2+ years of field service, technician, or engineering support experience
  • 3+ years HVAC experience
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills
  • Strong communication and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work independently in field environments

Minimum Physical Requirements

  • Field-based role with work performed at customer or project sites
  • Travel may be required depending on project assignments
  • Work may occur in industrial, construction, or outdoor environments
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and perform physically active work when required
