What is an online recovery coach?

An Online Recovery Coach is a trained professional who provides support, guidance, and accountability to individuals working to overcome addiction, all through virtual platforms. They help clients set recovery goals, develop coping skills, and navigate challenges in their recovery journey. While they do not provide therapy or medical treatment, they offer encouragement and practical advice, often drawing from personal experience or specialized training. Online Recovery Coaches can be accessed from anywhere, making support more flexible and accessible for those in need.

How does an online recovery coach typically collaborate with other healthcare professionals to support clients?

Online Recovery Coaches often work closely with therapists, medical providers, and support groups to ensure clients receive comprehensive care. While coaches focus on goal-setting, accountability, and encouragement, they coordinate with licensed professionals when clinical intervention is needed. Regular communication and case updates help create a unified support system for the client. This collaborative approach enhances recovery outcomes and ensures that clients are guided to appropriate resources throughout their journey.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an online recovery coach, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Online Recovery Coach, you need a solid understanding of addiction recovery principles, motivational interviewing, and preferably a relevant certification such as Certified Recovery Coach (CRC) or equivalent experience in counseling or peer support. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, secure messaging, and digital record-keeping systems is typically required. Job description

Recovery Coaching is a form of strength-based support for individuals seeking recovery from a self-identified addiction or substance use disorder. Our role is to help individuals identify ways to sustain recovery or reduce harm associated with addictive behaviors. We are individuals in long-term recovery who are trained and certified by state-approved organizations, celebrate various pathways to recovery, and are familiar with local recovery support services and resources. This is an as-needed position. Hourly wages start at $21. The number of hours worked can vary significantly from week to week. Per-diem employees are not eligible for benefit programs.

Main Responsibilities

  • Assist participants in improving their present life and reaching future goals by collaborating to create and follow a recovery plan.

  • Maintain the standards of personal and professional conduct identified in the Vermont Certified Recovery Coach Code of Ethics.

  • Stay informed and aligned with all workplace policies and procedures.

  • Meet participants for one hour a week via phone, in-person, or virtually.

  • Exercise the evidence–based practice of Motivational Interviewing during sessions.

  • Listen, motivate, and support participants in their recovery.

  • Respect the rights and dignity of participants.

  • Complete necessary documentation within 48 hours of session completion.

  • Communicate with designated supervisor for support, resources, concerns, and/or questions

All Recovery Coaches employed by the Turning Point Center are required to pursue certification and eventual licensure. To become eligible for certification, the following requirements must be met: possess a GED or high school diploma, complete an approved Recovery Coach Academy program and Ethics training, complete 500 hours of volunteer/paid Recovery Coach work, and complete 25 hours of supervision. After these requirements have been met, certification can be accomplished by passing the IC&RC exam. Recovery Coaches are expected to keep track of their session hours and to communicate with their designated supervisor once they have become eligible to take the certification exam. After exam completion, Recovery Coaches then apply through the appropriate online portal to receive their license, granting them the title of Recovery Peer Support Specialist. Licensure must be renewed biennially.
