Library Assistant

As an integral part of the front-line service team, the Library Assistant is responsible for providing customer service to patrons while performing a variety of duties associated with the delivery and operation of library services. This entry-level role performs routine support to maintain the organization, functionality, and appearance of the library. Hours for the library are Monday – Thursday 10am – 8pm, Friday and Saturday 10am – 5pm, and Sunday 1pm – 5pm. This position is scheduled to work days, evenings, and rotating weekends.

• Participates in and implements customer services responsibilities associated with the circulation desk, including but not limited to, registering library cards, checking in and out library materials, handling fees, processing problem check-ins and directing patrons in the use of library services, technology and materials.

• Performs all duties associated with library material handling and distribution.

• Processes cash and credit card transactions, financial reporting, and bank deposits.

• Performs opening and closing library duties and prepare the library for public use.

• Processes all incoming and outgoing Interlibrary Loan materials for local and regional libraries.

• Processes new and withdraw old issues of magazines and newspapers.

•Processes and receives new materials.

•Assist in the physical preparation of new materials for the library collection by unpacking new materials, affixing labels, stamping, covering dust jackets, and packaging audio-visual materials. Likewise, repair damaged materials, and process withdrawn materials in the library collection.

• Mediates meeting room reservations.

• Sort library materials in preparation for shelving or filing, retrieving and checking in books from book drop and automated materials handling system. Check condition of each item for damage. Shelve or file books, periodicals, and other library materials.

• Ensure the orderly appearance of the library by shelf reading to maintain proper location; straighten books that have been shifted during shelving process.

• Check in library materials and retrieve items from paging and other library lists.

• Straighten library; clear tables; put furniture in place; assist with library equipment.

• Prepare library materials, as directed, for delivery to other library system branches or metro-area libraries.

• Process and handle materials for the Express Library Services.

• Participate in on-going environmental scan of library to ensure a safe and friendly physical environment.

• Collects and sorts daily mail.

• Instructs and assists customers in the use of the online catalog and other library electronic equipment and machines including fax, copiers, computers, printers, and self-check-out machines.

•Performs other duties of a comparable level or type.

• High school diploma or GED and one year related work experience in a customer service field, preferably library experience or face-to-face customer service. AND Valid driver's license or evidence of mobility.
