Job Summary
The Instructional Designer (ID) 2 is responsible for working collaboratively with faculty, subject matter experts, and cross-departmental stakeholders in conceptualization, design, development, and on-time delivery of high-quality online courses and learning experiences. The ID2 will ensure the courses they develop meet federal accessibility standards, university policies, and AU Online Guiding Principles. They play an active role in team decision making related to team goals, adopted instructional design processes, adoption of educational and eLearning authoring technology, quality assurance process refinement, as well as the improvement of continuous improvement practices. Their contributions to the development of processes and procedures will ensure consistency, on-going quality, and regulatory compliance of all AU Online courses and programs. As senior course designers, they will model best practices in course design and faculty engagement. They will serve as mentors for those in the Instructional Designer 1 role. The ID2 will advise the Director of Instructional Designer regarding emerging design practices and educational technologies. In addition, they will alert the Director of concerns of potential issues or shortcomings in the Team's practices. The successful candidate will be a creative problem solver and is expected to engage in a spirit of positive support for instructional innovation and to work collaboratively with colleagues across the campus community.
Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:
ONLINE LEARNING EXPERIENCES AND MATERIALS:
  • Collaborate with faculty on learning design and best practice pedagogy in the creation of premium online courses.
  • Assist faculty members with the development of multimedia materials for their courses.
  • Serve as the project manager for each course development project.
  • Create valid assessments which result in artifacts to serve as evidence of learning for both formative and summative performances.
  • Source/create interactive content to ensure learners remain engaged, and courses see minimal attrition.
  • Review and update existing courses based on student and faculty data.
  • Work closely with team members to develop faculty support resources.
  • Make informed recommendations on changes and adjustments to learning experiences using performance data, and instructor/student feedback as required.

QUALITY ASSURANCE PRACTICES:
  • Engage in the continuous improvement of quality assurance processes and tools.
  • Apply rubrics to evaluate the quality of course design.
  • Consult with instructors regarding the accessibility of electronic materials, copyright, and compliance with pertinent regulations, policies, and accreditation regarding documents they add while they are teaching.

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT:
  • Educate faculty while collaborating with them in the course design about topics such as learning design, accessibility, faculty presence, student feedback options and, and engagement with students via educational technologies.
  • Design and facilitate faculty development offerings

MENTORSHIP :
  • Serve as the lead for ID1 onboarding.
  • Embody the role of mentorship in interactions with team members and others as appropriate.

OTHER: Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited college or university in instructional design, educational technology or a related field from an accredited institution with three or more years working as a team member in a higher education setting as an instructional designer, to include experience with online course development and integration of educational technology in the learning environment within an LMS, and some experience with multimedia development.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Five years of experience in instructional design in online higher education
  • Online and/or hybrid teaching experience in higher education
  • Familiarity with learning analytics collection, analysis, and impact on course continuous improvement
  • Demonstrated success working with faculty members or other instructional staff to improve teaching and learning and in their use of learning management systems.
  • Experience using learning management systems, visual presentation software, online collaboration tools, and web authoring tools to create online learning environments
  • Experience developing and facilitating professional development opportunities for faculty members.

Salary: Minimum $56,600/annually - Midpoint:$72,000/annual
Salary to be commensurate with the qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum midpoint) of the position.
