General Summary:
The Professional Coding Manager is responsible for overseeing the professional claims coding team and ensuring accurate, efficient coding of patient records for billing, compliance, and reimbursement purposes. Needs skills with operational leadership, compliance oversight, team management, and process improvement within the healthcare revenue cycle.
Responsibilities:
1. Oversee day-to-day operations of the medical coding team, ensuring timely and accurate coding and allocation of duties
2. Ensure that all codes (ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, etc.) are applied correctly and consistently according to official coding guidelines.
3. Conduct regular internal/external audits to ensure compliance with federal regulations (e.g., CMS, HIPAA) and payer requirements address issues discovered
4. Maintain knowledge of coding regulations, AMA/CMS guidelines and payer requirements.
5. Research and Development of Compliance and Coding Standards
6. Provide training for new hires and ongoing education for existing staff.
7. Track coding productivity and quality metrics (e.g., charts coded per day, accuracy rates). Prepare reports regarding coding efficiency, denial trends, audit outcomes, etc.
8. Identify trends, issues, or bottlenecks through performance data and propose process improvements.
9. Work in collaboration with the RCM team to resolve any coding/insurance verification related issues by working closely with team members and other departments to implement solutions.
10. Collaborate with physicians and APCs to clarify documentation and coding queries. New physician and APC education.
11. Maintains accurate budget data and monitors coding staff productivity
12. All other duties as assigned as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience:
  • Education: Associate Degree Related field
  • Credential(s): Certified Coding Specialist Or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification.
  • Experience:
    Required: Minimum of 5 years of experience in a professional medical office space or health system. 5 years of coding experience.
    Preferred: Five (5) years supervisory experience, 10 years of professional coding experience.

  • Education: Bachelor Degree Health Care or Health Information Technology or related field.
