Job Description
ECU Department of Transit is currently seeking Transit Vehicle Operators to perform the following duties:
  • Complete a training course involving, but not limited to, online training, classroom training, written work, quizzes/tests, and behind-the-wheel training.
  • Familiarize self with system and safety features; geography and roadways of assigned routes and service areas; traffic rules, regulations, and laws.
  • Operate a transit vehicle to pick up, transport, and discharge passengers while adhering to the route schedule and maintaining a pleasant and courteous manner.
  • Provide information on bus services to customers, including bus schedules, routes, and local information.
  • Receive and transmit two-way radio communications regarding accidents, incidents, emergencies, criminal activities, or any other authorized ECU Transit business while utilizing judgment and discretion to ensure customer and individual safety.
  • Perform vehicle operations at variable times of day and night. May work outside regular business hours as required by service demands.
  • Operate a wheelchair lift, secure passengers' mobility devices, and assist passengers with disabilities with boarding, riding, and alighting in a safe manner including pushing a manual wheelchair up a steep ramp if necessary.
  • Write reports and complete forms as required. May prepare detailed written reports concerning accidents/incidents, breakdowns, and mechanical defects as required at the end of a shift.
  • Complete ongoing training courses for professional development provided by ECU Transit during the duration of employment.
  • Work at least 15-20 hours per week, depending on service demands.
  • Work is primarily between 06:00 am to 01:00 am for both bus and On-Demand operators including some nights, weekends, holidays, and special events.

GPA Requirement
Minimum of 2.0
Preferred (Majors, Experience, GPA, etc.)
  • Must have held a valid North Carolina Driver's License, Class C or higher for a minimum of one year.
  • Applicants with out-of-state licenses must have the ability to switch to a North Carolina Driver's License.
  • Must have a clean driving history, with no suspensions and 3 points or less on Motor Vehicle Record, and no moving violations within the last 12 months.
  • Must have no drug or alcohol-related violations with the university within the last two years.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and continue to pass random drug and/or alcohol testing throughout the duration of employment (Bus Operator applicants only).
  • Must be able to obtain a Class B Commercial Learner's Permit (Bus Operator applicants only).
    • Fees associated are reimbursed after completion of the training program.
  • Must have availability to work for at least one year (Bus Operator applicants only).
