Job Description Summary
Character of Duties:
Asian cycad scale (Aulacaspis yasumatsui, CAS) was detected on Guam in 2003, likely
brought in with ornamental cycads. It quickly infested the native cycad species, Cycas
micronesica (fadang), and spread throughout the island. Damage from the scale leads to
mortality in seedling and juveniles and a decline in resilience to other pests. As a result,
fading has declined from the most abundant forest tree on Guam in the 2003 forest inventory,
to a rare species in the 2013 forest inventory. C. micronesica was placed on the IUCN Red
List of Threatened Species in 2006 and was listed as threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service in 2015. There is a real possibility of extinction from its native range.
Two biocontrols were introduced in 2005 (a coccinellid beetle, Rhyzobius lophanthae, and a
parasitoid wasp). Of the two, only R. lophanthae successfully established and provides a minimum level of control. This project will initiate research and development of additional biocontrol agents to manage CAS in the Mariana Islands. A primary goal is the identification of new or existing CAS biocontrol agents suitable for rearing, release, and evaluation on Guam or the adjacent island of Rota.
The Post-Doctoral Researcher will perform the following:
Perform comprehensive literature review of biological control efforts, not limited to Asian cycad scale, in Micronesia;
Develop collaborative activities with biological control laboratories in the United States (U.S.), and worldwide, applicable to biological control of Asian cycad scale;
