Job description

On-Call Relief Crew Member

Location: Hollis, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska Pay: $19.30 per hour Employment Type: On-Call; Not Benefit-Eligible

On-Call Relief Crew Members provide coverage as operational needs arise and must be available on short notice, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

Typical shifts are:

  • Relief Deckhand: 6:30 a.m.–6:15 p.m.
  • Relief Night Watch: 6:15 p.m.–6:30 a.m.

Hours are not guaranteed, and this position does not have a regular work schedule.

Position Summary

The Inter-Island Ferry Authority is seeking dependable, safety-minded individuals to provide on-call vessel coverage in Hollis. Depending on operational needs, employees may be assigned as either a Relief Deckhand or Relief Night Watch.

This position supports vessel safety, security, cleanliness, and passenger service while providing valuable training and hands-on maritime experience.

Relief Deckhand Responsibilities

β€’ Assist passengers and help provide a safe and welcoming travel experience.

β€’ Support compliance with vessel safety and security procedures.

β€’ Maintain passenger cabins, decks, and assigned vessel areas.

β€’ Assist with docking and undocking, including handling vessel lines weighing up to 70 pounds.

β€’ Perform watch duties and participate in drills or emergency response under the direction of the Mate or Master.

β€’ Perform other vessel duties as assigned.

Relief Night Watch Responsibilities

β€’ Maintain an overnight safety and security watch aboard the vessel.

β€’ Conduct regular rounds and monitor vessel access, equipment, lines, and surrounding conditions.

β€’ Report suspicious activity, unsafe conditions, emergencies, or unusual vessel conditions.

β€’ Tend vessel lines as weather, tides, or vessel conditions require.

β€’ Clean and maintain assigned vessel, ramp, and terminal areas.

β€’ Complete required watch records and communicate relevant information to vessel personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Be available for daytime or overnight assignments on short notice.
  • Be able to work in rain, wind, cold, darkness, and changing marine conditions.
  • Be able to lift and pull up to 70 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Remain alert throughout extended daytime or overnight shifts.
  • Follow verbal and written safety, security, and emergency instructions.
  • Communicate professionally with passengers, coworkers, and supervisors.
  • Work effectively both independently and as part of a vessel crew.
  • Comply with applicable drug and alcohol testing requirements.
Preferred Qualifications

β€’ Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).

β€’ Current First Aid and CPR certification.

β€’ Valid Alaska driver's license.

β€’ Previous maritime, security, custodial, transportation, emergency-response, or customer-service experience.

Applicants who do not currently hold the preferred credentials may still be considered.

Compensation and Opportunities

This position pays $21.00 per hour and is not eligible for the IFA's regular employee benefits package. Employees receive position-specific training and an opportunity to gain maritime experience that may lead to future full-time, benefit-eligible positions with the IFA.
