Job description

Job Title: On Call Mess Attendant
Department: Food Services
Job Summary:
This position performs serves as a cafeteria and/or delicatessen/bakery worker helping in the preparation, presentation and serving of specialty meats, delicacies, preserved foods, cheeses, salads, breads and sweets to patrons. Cleans counters and trays, washes dishes and maintains cleanliness of preparation, work and display areas, inspects and cleans equipment. Performance is evaluated on compliance with instructions, accepted serving practices, customer service skills, and sanitary requirements.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • None

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Set up food on serving lines and portion food for individual servings in accordance with instructions and time requirements
  • Serve food to those in serving lines, re-fill cold bars, salad bars, pastry cabinets, condiments, juice dispensers, and set up dining rooms at an efficient pace
  • Make coffee per established procedures
  • Replace glassware, dishes, and silverware, as well as refill condiment containers
  • Remove dishes, glasses, and silverware from serving counters
  • Mix washing solutions and operate commercial dishwashing machine, loading and unloading, and/or washing, by hand, dishes glassware, pots, pans, and kitchen utensils by hand
  • Breaks down bussing cart, loads dishwasher and puts dishware in proper places after drying
  • Maintain in a clean and sanitary condition: all equipment, utensils, work areas, tables, restrooms, exterior of buildings, etc.; ensuring proper sanitization, cleaning processes, and procedures are adhered to, and standards reached
  • Empty trash containers, and manage waste and recyclables according to pre-established standards and procedures
  • Cleans and sanitizes food prep & dining room tables
  • Cleans commercial kitchen equipment, i.e., fryers, ovens, kettles, grills, mixers, choppers, slicers, refrigerators, warmers, and sinks
  • Sweeps and mops floors
  • Follow uniform requirements as prescribed in company rules and contract requirements

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Proficient written and oral communication skills according to skill requirements
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least two years of related experience preferred

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged period of standing, bending, reaching, and working with hands
  • Occasional periods of prolonged exposure to load noises
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds at times
  • Ability to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands as necessary
  • Ability to hear and see to position and safety requirement levels
  • Occasional exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, and chemicals

Special Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Must be able to successfully pass as required a federal, state, or local government's background investigation
