As of Aug 7, 2026, the average yearly pay for on call flight attendant in the United States is $47,079.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $35,500.00 and $50,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Do on call flight attendants get paid for being on call?

On call flight attendants typically do not receive pay for the time they are on call unless they are called to work a flight. When called in, they are usually paid for the hours worked, which may include a minimum guarantee or standby pay depending on airline policies and union agreements. It is important for flight attendants to review their specific airline's policies and employment contracts for detailed information.

What are some common challenges faced by on call flight attendants, and how can they be managed?

On call flight attendants often encounter unpredictability in their schedules, which can make it challenging to balance personal commitments and maintain a regular routine. Being prepared for last-minute assignments and staying organized are essential for success in this role. Many flight attendants find it helpful to keep a 'go bag' packed at all times and maintain open communication with their scheduling team. Building flexibility and resilience helps manage the demands and ensures readiness for a variety of flight routes and crew collaborations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an on call flight attendant?

To thrive as an On Call Flight Attendant, you need customer service expertise, safety and emergency training, and usually a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with airline-specific systems, FAA safety protocols, and first aid certifications are typically required. Strong communication, adaptability to irregular schedules, and calmness under pressure are essential soft skills for this role. These attributes are crucial for ensuring passenger safety, delivering excellent service, and adapting quickly to the unpredictable demands of on-call flight scheduling.

What is the easiest airline to get hired as an on call flight attendant?

The ease of being hired as an on call flight attendant varies by airline, but regional carriers and smaller airlines often have less competitive hiring processes compared to major airlines. Candidates with customer service experience, relevant certifications, and flexible schedules tend to have better chances of securing on call flight attendant positions across various airlines.

What is an on call flight attendant?

On call flight attendants are airline crew members who are scheduled to be available for work on short notice, rather than having a set flight schedule. They are often part of a reserve pool and may be called in to replace absent crew members or cover unexpected staffing needs. On call flight attendants must be prepared to report to the airport quickly, sometimes within a few hours, and may not know their specific assignments in advance. This position requires flexibility, adaptability, and readiness to travel at a moment's notice. The role is common among new flight attendants and is a stepping stone to more predictable schedules.
