Position Summary: ย 
The role is on the Express Desk, a fast-paced, multi-functional position encompassing editing, production and reporting across KQED.org. This journalist moves seamlessly between functions, stays plugged into the news and thrives in a collaborative environment that values efficiency and speed.
The digital producer is a journalist who reports, edits and produces daily news items, feature stories and original content. At times, this journalist will produce audio content. They must be a strong writer and adept at reporting, story selection, writing headlines, copyediting and photo selection.

This role will work hybrid between working in KQED's newly renovated headquarters and working remotely.ย 

Essential Functions:
  • Edit news stories to ensure they inform and engage our audience.
  • Report, write and file on deadline as required by the news of the day.
  • Gather audio/video for digital and radio reporting.
  • Provide fill-in support as needed, including overseeing the Express Desk and other editorial production tasks.

  • Edits news and feature stories
  • Ensures text is consistent with KQED style guidelines
  • Ensures that images and captions are correct
  • Writes or edits highly effective headlines and excerpts that are accurate, compelling, engaging and SEO friendlyย 
  • Works as desk editor as needed
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Non-Essential Functions:
  • Occasionally fills in for other colleagues.
  • Represents KQED at events.
ย 
Knowledge/Experience Required:
  • Excellent communication and writing skills; ability to write quickly and accurately, with an understanding of tone and style across platforms
  • Writes text with correct spelling, grammar and punctuationย 
  • Ability to meet deadlines and goals while working under pressure
  • At least one year experience in a similar role in a newsroom or news environmentย 
  • Experience writing and editing quickly and accurately in Englishย 
  • Command of AP style
  • Experience with copy editing multimedia content such as graphics, interactives or videos
  • Proven collaboration skills โ€” which are essential in working with fellow KQED staffers across departments and with partner organizations
  • Experience navigating the front and back end of a content management systemย 
  • Familiarity with social media and engagement platforms
  • Ability to work on their own and as part of a team
  • Ability to stay focused, organized and proactive
  • Ability to stay organized and prioritize tasks when working on multiple projects at onceย 
  • Interest and knowledge in Bay Area news with a focus on local communitiesย 
  • Checks work before publication and maintains adherence to facts
