What is an on call CDL driver?

An On Call CDL Driver is a professional truck or commercial vehicle driver who holds a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and works as needed, rather than on a set schedule. These drivers are typically contacted by employers or agencies when there is a demand for deliveries, pickups, or transportation services. The job offers flexibility but requires drivers to be ready to work on short notice. On Call CDL Drivers may operate a variety of vehicles, including tractor-trailers, box trucks, or buses, depending on their license class and employer needs. This role is common in industries with fluctuating transportation demands, such as logistics, construction, and event services.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an on call CDL driver?

To thrive as an On Call CDL Driver, you need a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), a clean driving record, and knowledge of DOT regulations. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems, electronic logging devices (ELDs), and various types of commercial vehicles is typically required. Reliability, flexibility, and strong communication skills help drivers manage unpredictable schedules and interact with clients or dispatchers effectively. These skills and qualities are critical for ensuring safety, timely deliveries, and adaptability in a dynamic work environment.

What are the typical scheduling expectations and challenges for an on call CDL driver?

As an On Call CDL Driver, you should be prepared for irregular and often last-minute scheduling, which can mean working evenings, weekends, or holidays depending on company needs. Flexibility is key, as routes and assignments may vary from week to week, and you may not always know your schedule far in advance. While this role offers the benefit of diverse driving experiences and potentially higher hourly rates, it can also present challenges in maintaining a consistent work-life balance. Effective communication with dispatch and staying organized can help you manage these scheduling demands successfully.

Job description

Join Our Team

We're on a mission to be the team of choice for our people and the partner of choice for our customers and vendors. From humble beginnings in a machine shed to an operation of 600+ people, IPC is now a national leader in pallet manufacturing, recycling, and logistics innovation. We're gritty, growing, and focused on building real relationships and real solutions.

We're not just looking for someone who can drive a truck—we're looking for a high-character, dependable road warrior who takes pride in doing things right, showing up every day, and being a crucial part of a tight-knit, high-performing team. We have a position available for full-time, 10-12 hour days, Monday through Friday, and some Saturdays.

Day shift starts at 3 AM. Afternoon shift starts at 3 PM.

If you're the type of person who:

  • Knows your way around a rig and people.
  • Leads with respect and represents the company like it were your own.
  • Has a get-it-done attitude, a strong back, and even stronger values.
  • Wants to work somewhere you're known by name—not just a truck number.
  • Dry van experience required, flat bed and walking floor experience is helpful.

If you've worked in any job that taught you discipline, hustle, and respect—you'll fit right in here.

What you'll be doing:

  • Be the face of IPC on the road. Represent IPC with professionalism and pride at every delivery and pickup. Build relationships with our customers and make sure they get the service and product they deserve—on time, every time. Communicate clearly and respectfully with your dispatch team and crew—because teamwork doesn't stop at the dock.
  • Own your truck, own the job. Take care of your truck like it's your own—clean, fueled, and safe. Keep it legal, keep it safe—DOT compliance and safety first, always. Check loads, secure them, and double-check them. You're the last line before that product hits the customer.
  • Live the culture. Bring good energy to work every day. No egos. No drama. Help us build a team that supports each other, trusts each other, and has each other's backs. Speak up when something's off. Fix it when you can. Ask for help when you need it.

Who you are:

  • You've got a valid CDL (Class A) and a safe driving record with 2 years of experience.
  • You're reliable, respectful, and ready to work. You don't need someone chasing you down—you show up and own it.
  • You're not afraid to get a little dirty, help with loading, and be part of a bigger mission.
  • You care about people, not just pallets.
  • You're comfortable with some on-call expectations—we hustle when needed.
  • You're looking to grow—not just clock in and clock out.

What you'll get:

  • Steady hours, competitive pay, and overtime when the job calls for it.
  • A company that backs its drivers and treats you like part of the team—not just a name on a route sheet.
  • Full benefits package, including:
    • 401(k) with match
    • Health, dental & vision insurance
    • Paid time off
    • Life insurance & more
  • A work environment where your work ethic matters more than your resume.
  • A long-term home where you can grow into a leader, if that's where you're headed.

Ready to drive for something real? If you're ready to drive more than just miles—if you're ready to drive a mission, drive a team, and drive your own growth—then IPC wants to talk to you. Bring your boots, your work ethic, and your best attitude. Let's roll.

Experience:

  • CDL Driving: 2 years (Required)

License/Certification:

  • CDL-A License (Required)
