What is a CDL recruiter?

CDL recruiters are professionals who specialize in finding, screening, and hiring qualified commercial drivers, primarily those who hold a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), for trucking companies and transportation firms. They are responsible for sourcing candidates, conducting interviews, verifying credentials, and ensuring drivers meet regulatory and company standards. CDL recruiters play a vital role in maintaining a strong and reliable workforce, helping companies address driver shortages and fill open positions efficiently.

What are common challenges faced by CDL recruiters when sourcing qualified drivers, and how can these be addressed?

CDL Recruiters often face challenges such as a limited pool of qualified drivers, high competition from other carriers, and strict compliance requirements. To overcome these hurdles, recruiters can focus on building strong relationships with driving schools, utilizing digital platforms to reach passive candidates, and staying up-to-date with regulatory changes. Additionally, clear communication about job expectations and benefits helps attract and retain top talent in a competitive market.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a CDL recruiter?

To thrive as a CDL Recruiter, you need a solid understanding of commercial driver qualifications, recruiting best practices, and DOT regulations, often supported by experience in transportation or human resources. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), background check platforms, and recruitment marketing tools is typically required. Outstanding communication, relationship-building, and organizational skills help you connect with candidates and coordinate efficiently with hiring managers. These skills ensure the recruiter can attract, evaluate, and secure qualified drivers quickly and compliantly in a highly competitive industry.

Job description

Do you get excited about helping drivers land their next opportunity?

US 1 Shorthaul is looking for a recruiter who thrives in a fast-moving environment and takes pride in connecting CDL and driver candidates with career opportunities that can make a meaningful impact on their lives.

This role is centered on driver recruiting. The person in this seat will spend the vast majority of their time recruiting, screening, and guiding CDL and driver candidates through the hiring process. This is not a broad recruiting role with a light driver component. We are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys working with drivers, understands the importance of the details, and can keep hiring momentum moving in a high-priority environment.

The right person will be proactive, organized, detail-oriented, and strong with follow-through. They will be comfortable working across multiple systems, maintaining accurate records, and helping ensure candidates meet minimum hiring and safety requirements.

While recruiters have assigned sites and core ownership, this team works with a shared-support mindset. We partner closely, communicate openly, and step in to help one another when priorities shift or workloads spike. The right person will be able to take ownership of their work while also contributing as a strong team player.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Recruit primarily for CDL and driver positions
  • Communicate with candidates by phone, email, and recruiting platforms
  • Build relationships with driver candidates and guide them through the hiring process from first contact through next steps
  • Screen candidates carefully to confirm qualifications, work history, and minimum safety requirements
  • Utilize multiple systems and tools to track applicants, verify information, and maintain accurate candidate records
  • Coordinate candidate movement through the hiring process in a timely and organized manner
  • Maintain detailed notes, strong follow-up, and clear communication throughout the process
  • Partner with internal leaders regarding hiring priorities, candidate status, and recruiting progress
  • Team-oriented mindset with the ability to own assigned sites while also stepping in to support broader team priorities when needed
  • Help create a positive candidate experience and strong first impression of US 1 Shorthaul

What We’re Looking For:

  • Experience in transportation, CDL, or driver recruiting (preferred)
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to catch small issues before they become bigger problems
  • Highly proactive work style with strong ownership and urgency
  • Excellent communication and follow-through
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Comfort using multiple systems to track candidate progress and hiring activity
  • Ability to work independently while staying aligned with team and business needs
  • Someone who genuinely enjoys driver recruiting and is energized by a detail-heavy, fast-paced environment

Why this role matters:
At US 1 Shorthaul, every hire matters. We are looking for someone who will create a positive experience for candidates while helping us bring in safe, qualified drivers who fit how we operate.

About US 1 Shorthaul:
US 1 Shorthaul supports transportation and logistics operations across the country, with a strong focus on safety, service, and reliability. We are looking for team members who communicate well, move with urgency, and take pride in the impact their work makes.

  • Health Insurance
  • Dental Insurance
  • Vision Insurance
  • 401(k) with Company Match
  • Employer-Paid Life Insurance
  • Employer-Paid AD&D Insurance
