As of Jul 5, 2026, the average yearly pay for on call analog layout design engineer in the United States is $186,238.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $202,000.00 and $202,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Is analog layout design a good career?

Analog layout design is a specialized field within semiconductor engineering that involves creating physical layouts for analog circuits, requiring skills in CAD tools and understanding of circuit behavior. It offers steady demand due to the ongoing need for high-performance analog components in electronics, and professionals often work in cleanroom environments with a focus on precision and detail. Career growth depends on experience, technical expertise, and industry demand for analog ICs.

Can AI replace an analog design engineer?

AI can assist analog layout design engineers by automating routine tasks and optimizing circuit layouts, but it cannot fully replace the expertise, creativity, and judgment required for complex analog circuit design. Human engineers are essential for interpreting specifications, troubleshooting, and making nuanced decisions that current AI tools cannot replicate. Therefore, AI serves as a complementary tool rather than a replacement in the role of an analog layout design engineer.

How much does an analog layout engineer make in the US?

An on-call analog layout design engineer in the US typically earns between $80,000 and $130,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and company size. Salaries for specialized roles involving IC layout, CAD tools, and circuit design can vary within this range.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an On Call Analog Layout Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an On Call Analog Layout Design Engineer, you need a solid background in analog/mixed-signal circuit layout, semiconductor physics, and a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with EDA tools such as Cadence Virtuoso, knowledge of design rule checking (DRC), and experience with LVS verification are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in collaborating with circuit designers and resolving layout challenges. These skills ensure the creation of robust, manufacturable, and high-performance analog integrated circuits.

What are some common challenges faced by On Call Analog Layout Design Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

On Call Analog Layout Design Engineers often encounter challenges related to tight project deadlines, cross-team communication, and managing design revisions. Since the role is on-call, engineers must be adaptable and ready to respond to urgent layout changes or last-minute design adjustments. Effective collaboration with circuit designers and verification teams is essential for ensuring design accuracy and meeting tape-out schedules. Utilizing strong organizational skills and clear communication can help address these challenges and ensure successful project delivery.

What does an On Call Analog Layout Design Engineer do?

An On Call Analog Layout Design Engineer is responsible for creating the physical layout of analog integrated circuits, ensuring that the designs meet performance, area, and power requirements. They work closely with circuit designers to translate schematics into manufacturable layouts using specialized CAD tools. Typically, they are brought in on a temporary or project basis to address specific design needs or workload spikes. Their work is critical to the function and reliability of chips used in electronics such as smartphones, computers, and automotive systems.

What is the difference between On Call Analog Layout Design Engineer vs Analog IC Design Engineer?

AspectOn Call Analog Layout Design EngineerAnalog IC Design Engineer
Primary FocusImplementing and optimizing analog circuit layouts on an as-needed basisDesigning and developing analog integrated circuits from concept to production
Work EnvironmentTypically in a design team, often on-call for specific tasks or issuesFull project lifecycle involvement, including simulation, layout, and testing
CredentialsBS/MS in Electrical Engineering, experience in layout designBS/MS/PhD in Electrical Engineering, strong circuit design background

While both roles require expertise in analog circuits and layout skills, the On Call Analog Layout Design Engineer primarily focuses on layout implementation and troubleshooting as needed, whereas the Analog IC Design Engineer is involved in the comprehensive design process of analog circuits. The former often works in a support capacity, while the latter leads design projects from start to finish.

How much do analog design engineers make?

Analog design engineers typically earn between $80,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior engineers with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher salaries, especially in high-demand sectors like semiconductor or integrated circuit design.
