What is an Olfactory job?

An olfactory job involves working with scents and smells, often in industries like perfumery, food and beverage, or environmental science. Professionals in this field analyze, develop, or enhance fragrances and flavors using their sense of smell. They may work as perfumers, sensory analysts, or researchers studying how smells affect human behavior and perception. Skills in chemistry, biology, and sensory evaluation are often required.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Olfactory position, and why are they important?

To thrive in an olfactory-related role, such as a sensory analyst or perfumer, you need an exceptional sense of smell, a background in chemistry or food science, and strong sensory evaluation skills. Experience with analytical instruments like gas chromatographs and training or certification in sensory analysis techniques are often valued. Attention to detail, strong communication, and teamwork skills help olfactory professionals accurately document findings and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These abilities are crucial to ensuring quality and consistency in products reliant on scent evaluation, such as fragrances, foods, or personal care items.

What does a typical workday look like for someone in an olfactory role such as a sensory analyst or perfumer?

A typical day for an olfactory professional often involves conducting sensory evaluations, recording and interpreting scent profiles, and collaborating with product development teams. You may work in a laboratory setting, using specialized tools to analyze and refine fragrances, flavors, or other scent-based products. Regular tasks can include testing samples, attending sensory panels, and ensuring products meet industry standards for quality and consistency. The role requires both independent analysis and teamwork, especially when developing new products or troubleshooting off-notes. This dynamic environment offers opportunities for continuous learning and innovation as you help shape distinctive sensory experiences.

Job description

Position
Details
Title
Postdoctoral Fellow Murthy Lab
School
Faculty of Arts and Sciences
Department/Area
Molecular and Cellular Biology
Position Description
A postdoctoral position is immediately available in the Murthy laboratory at Harvard University to study olfactory learning and behavior in mice. We seek a highly motivated individual with an interest in olfactory physiology and behavior. Our group is interested in understanding the neural and algorithmic basis of sensory-guided behaviors in terrestrial animals. We have developed behavioral tasks in mice using stimuli and situations that approximate natural settings, while allowing electrophysiological recordings, high-resolution optical imaging and optogenetic manipulation. In the current project, we are interested in studying learning and plasticity in the olfactory system. The olfactory tubercle is a ventral striatal brain region implicated in reward processing and motivated behaviors including addiction. Learning-induced changes in neural activity can occur rapidly and differentially in distinct types of neurons in this brain region, but the mechanisms are unclear. We will use a variety of techniques including optogenetics, electrophysiology and imaging to understand how neural circuits are modified during learning
Basic Qualifications
Successful candidates will have recently obtained a Ph.D. in a relevant field, demonstrated productivity through publication, and be able to clearly convey difficult scientific concepts through excellent written and oral communication.
Additional Qualifications
Experience in the mouse olfactory system physiology is strongly encouraged.
Special Instructions
Letters of recommendation are not required at the time of application; however, letters will be collected for finalists. Candidates should submit with their application contact information for two to three references from experts at the ladder faculty ranks or highly accomplished senior researchers from corporations of research institutes.
Please include the following items as part of your application:
  • Cover Letter containing short summary of previous research experience and future interests
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Name and contact information for 2-3 references.
