How much do oiler jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 15, 2026, the average hourly pay for oiler in Utah is $23.55, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.90 and $22.74 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the job duties of an oiler?

Oilers, or greasers, ensure that moving parts of machinery are properly greased. The job requires you to maintain equipment, apply proper lubrication, and ensure that any potential safety issues are brought to the attention of supervising staff. You also keep records of pressure and temperature gauges to ensure everything is running within design parameters. On ships, an oiler may also do work in other areas related to the engineering department or help with shipping tasks, depending on the ship’s command structure and needs.

What are some common challenges faced by oilers working on ships, and how can they prepare for them?

Oilers working aboard ships often encounter challenges such as working in confined, noisy engine rooms, handling physically demanding tasks, and maintaining equipment under time pressure. To prepare, it's important to develop strong attention to detail, physical stamina, and the ability to follow safety protocols strictly. Building good communication skills is also essential, as Oilers regularly coordinate with engineers and other crew members to keep the vessel running smoothly. Embracing ongoing training and staying updated on safety standards can help Oilers navigate these challenges effectively.

What is an oiler?

Oilers are skilled workers responsible for lubricating, maintaining, and monitoring machinery and equipment, particularly in industries like shipping, manufacturing, and construction. Their primary duty is to ensure that moving parts are properly oiled and free of debris to prevent wear and mechanical failure. Oilers often perform routine inspections, check fluid levels, and assist with minor repairs. They play a critical role in keeping equipment running smoothly and safely, reducing downtime and costly breakdowns.

What is the difference between Oiler vs Deckhand?

AspectOilerDeckhand

Work EnvironmentEngine room, machinery maintenanceDeck, exterior vessel areas, cargo handling
ResponsibilitiesMaintain engines, assist engineersAssist with deck operations, cleaning, cargo
Industry UsageMaritime, shipping, offshoreMaritime, fishing, recreational vessels

While both Oiler and Deckhand work on ships, Oilers focus on engine room maintenance and machinery, requiring specific engine certifications. Deckhands handle exterior tasks like cargo and deck maintenance. The roles often overlap in maritime environments, but Oilers are specialized in engine operations, whereas Deckhands support general vessel functions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an oiler, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Oiler, you need a solid understanding of lubrication techniques, basic mechanical knowledge, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with lubrication systems, hand tools, and maintenance management software is typically required, and some positions may prefer certifications such as the International Council for Machinery Lubrication (ICML) Level I. Attention to detail, reliability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for preventing equipment failures and coordinating with maintenance teams. These skills ensure optimal machinery performance, reduce downtime, and support the smooth operation of industrial or marine environments.
