The OHST Coordinator reports to the OHST Superintendent and the primary role is to develop and maintain effective safety, health and training programs, providing prescribed MSHA/ OSHA training, ensuring a high standard of recordkeeping, and monitoring workplace safety through regular inspections within the OHST Department.

Specific Departmental Requirements

Compliance & Administration:

  • Ensures all safety related activities are undertaken in accordance with Company policy and MSHA/OSHA requirements including Hazard IDs, pre-start checks, pre-start meetings, and incident reporting.
  • Assists with development and maintenance of safety and health standards in compliance with company, OSHA, MSHA, regulations, and appropriate risk procedures to protect the assets of the company.
  • Conducts regular safety and equipment inspections of work sites and informs supervisors of unsafe practices, conditions, and possible safety and health hazards.
  • Maintains a high standard of housekeeping in all work areas.
  • Coordinates with and accompanies inspectors as they audit the operation from a safety and health perspective.
  • Assist regulatory agencies and government representatives during inspections, audits, and investigations, ensuring timely provision of information and documentation while maintaining compliance with applicable laws and company policies.
  • Represent the Company during regulatory visits, ensuring compliance while protecting the Company's legal, operational, and commercial interests.
  • Coordinates safety and health issues and reports.
  • Maintains a close relationship with governmental regulatory agencies.
  • Implements and ensures compliance with new rules and regulations.
  • Follows up on recommendations and informs employees of work method changes.

Training:

  • Develops, implements, coordinates, delivers, and continuously evaluates occupational health and safety training and development programs to ensure compliance with legislative requirements, industry standards, and Northern Star policies and procedures.
  • Plans, facilitates, and delivers mandatory MSHA training, site-specific inductions, annual refresher training, and other health and safety education programs to employees, contractors, and visitors as required.
  • Assists in the planning, facilitation, and review of workplace risk assessments, hazard identification processes, and the implementation of effective risk control measures to reduce workplace injuries and occupational health risks.
  • Supports the management of workplace incidents through timely response, investigation, root cause analysis, reporting, corrective development, and follow-up to ensure continuous improvement and regulatory compliance.
  • Prepares comprehensive incident investigation reports and monitors corrective actions to ensure recommendations are implemented effectively and within agreed timeframes.
  • Participates as an active member of the site's Emergency Management Team, responding to medical, hazardous materials, rescue, environmental, and other emergency incidents in accordance with established emergency response procedures.
  • Assists with the planning, coordination, delivery, and evaluation of emergency response training exercises, mock emergency scenarios, and competency assessments to maintain the operational readiness of emergency response personnel.
  • Supports the maintenance and continuous improvement of emergency management systems, procedures, emergency equipment, and response capabilities to ensure site preparedness for a broad range of emergency situations.
  • Works collaboratively with operational leaders, supervisors, contractors, and employees to promote a proactive safety culture through education, coaching, mentoring, and continuous improvement initiatives focused on risk reduction and regulatory compliance.
  • Provides technical advice and guidance on occupational health, emergency preparedness, incident management, and regulatory compliance to support safe and efficient mining operations

Industrial Hygiene & Hazardous Materials:

  • Develops and maintains industrial hygiene programs to identify and control workplace health hazards.
  • Conducts exposure monitoring and recommends appropriate control measures.
  • Prepares industrial hygiene reports and advises management on performance and compliance.

Support:

  • Provides operational support to the Physician’s Assistant and Site Security functions as required.
  • Assists departments with contractor management, site inductions, and safety compliance.
  • Supports regulatory compliance and the effective implementation of site health, safety, and security procedures.
  • Collaborates with operational departments to promote a safe, secure, and compliant workplace.

Other:

  • Other duties as required

The Details:

Working a 22 days on, 20 days off, off rotating schedule of days and nights, up to 12 hours a day or more at a remote campsite. Extreme conditions, including but not limited to extreme and changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

Employees are required to stay on site at the company provided camp during the work rotation. Camp facilities provide dining service, games room, exercise & weight room, sauna, and accommodation rooms. Dormitory rooms have a land line phone, internet & cable tv programs. Cell service is available when using Wi-Fi. The Company provides a bus service to and from Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Tok, Alaska.
