Job description

Berkley Specialty Property operates in New York, Georgia and California, writing a U.S. nationwide book of business across a broad range of occupancy classes, working hard to understand the unique needs of our clients. This is done with empowered underwriting, a fair and efficient claims team and leading wordings and technical backup services to offer our clients a long-term, sustainable product.


The Assistant Underwriter will support the underwriting team in delivering Berkley Specialty Property’s business plan through a combination of underwriting support, technical processing, and operational oversight. The role focuses on assisting Underwriters with risk assessment, pricing and pre-bind activity, while ensuring high-quality data, efficient processing, and effective use of offshore support.

Underwriting Support & Risk Assessment

  • Support the assessment of new and renewal business within agreed underwriting guidelines
  • Assist with pricing and rating using approved tools and models
  • Prepare pre-bind documentation, including quotes, summaries and underwriting packs
  • Ensure submission data is complete and accurate to enable effective underwriting decisions
  • Monitor pipelines, renewals and outstanding items, proactively following up with brokers and Underwriters
  • Support Underwriters in broker interactions, including meeting preparation and follow-up
  • Produce management information, reporting and portfolio data to support underwriting activity

Offshore Resource Oversight

  • Provide training and oversight of offshore resources responsible for administrative processing
  • Monitor delivery to ensure completion within agreed service levels and quality standards
  • Perform quality assurance reviews on offshore output (e.g. data entry, document preparation)
  • Act as the primary liaison between the underwriting team and offshore support

Stakeholder & Team Contribution

  • Build effective working relationships with Underwriters, brokers and internal stakeholders
  • Contribute to a collaborative team environment and actively participate in team discussions
  • Support consistent service delivery aligned to Berkley Specialty standards

Compliance, Controls & Governance

  • Adhere to all internal policies, underwriting authorities, and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain accurate audit trails and documentation standards
  • Support underwriting control processes, including peer review, due diligence and data governance

Technology & AI

  • Utilise AI tools (e.g. Copilot) to improve efficiency, accuracy and quality of delivery
  • Actively adopt new technologies and digital processes in day-to-day activities
  • Apply appropriate judgement, governance and data security awareness in the use of AI

  • Previous experience in an underwriting support or insurance operations role preferred

  • Exposure to property underwriting or commercial insurance is advantageous

  • Strong numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail

  • Experience using underwriting, rating or policy administration systems preferred

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel

  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

  • Proactive, organised and able to work both independently and collaboratively
