What does off the books mean in employment?

'Off the books' employment refers to jobs where an employee is paid in cash or other means without official records or reporting to tax authorities. This type of work is not documented in payroll or tax paperwork, often to avoid taxes or regulations. While some may find it appealing for quick cash, it is illegal and can result in serious consequences for both the employer and employee, including fines and lack of legal protections. Workers paid off the books are not eligible for benefits like social security, unemployment, or workers’ compensation. It's important to understand the risks involved before accepting off-the-books work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an off the books worker?

To thrive as an Off The Books worker, you generally need practical experience in your trade or service area and a proven ability to complete tasks efficiently. Familiarity with relevant tools and equipment is expected, though formal certifications may not always be required. Strong reliability, discretion, and communication skills help build trust with clients or employers. These qualities are important because they ensure consistent work opportunities and positive word-of-mouth referrals, which are crucial in informal employment arrangements.

What are some of the risks and challenges associated with working in an off the books position?

Working in an 'off the books' or cash-only job means your employment is not officially reported to government agencies, which can expose you to several risks. You may lack legal protections such as minimum wage, overtime pay, workers' compensation, and unemployment benefits. Additionally, without official records, it can be challenging to prove your employment history when applying for future jobs, loans, or housing. It's important to weigh these risks carefully and consider the potential long-term impact on your financial stability and career growth.

Job description

About Us
Rho is the modern banking platform built for startups. Open accounts in minutes, issue cards, manage expenses, pay bills, and close the books - all in one connected platform backed by real human support.
About the Role
As a Client Service Associate on the Client Services team, you will support our clients (entrepreneurs and their finance teams) by providing effective, timely assistance over live chat, phone, email, and text. You will handle inquiries ranging from basic technical issues, such as password resets, to complex service questions, such as guidance on ERP integrations or setting up an expense management policy on the platform. This role is based full-time in our Salt Lake City office and offers the opportunity to build strong customer service and finance operations skills at a growing company.
Responsibilities
  • Customer issue resolution: Address and resolve client issues via chat, phone, email, and text, applying good judgment and Rho's service standards in every interaction.
  • Service documentation: Document common client issues and resolutions to help build the team's knowledge base.
  • Feedback collection: Gather client feedback to help identify service improvements.
  • Team communication: Document and communicate ongoing issues to teammates and leadership for follow-up when needed.
  • Process adherence: Follow established protocols and procedures for client service delivery.
Qualifications
  • 2+ years of experience in customer service; financial services or startup experience preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly to clients.
  • Self-motivated with good judgment and sound decision-making, particularly during shifts with lighter on-site coverage.
  • Basic understanding of finance concepts: banking, credit cards, and accounting principles.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and adapting to changing priorities.
Schedule
This role is in-office at our Salt Lake City office in the Gateway (parking included), five days per week. Two shift schedules are available:
  • Tuesday-Saturday, 3:00 PM-12:00 AM MST
  • Sunday-Thursday, 3:00 PM-12:00 AM MST

Applicants can select their preferred shift, or indicate they are open to both, in the application.
Our people are our most valuable asset. The salary range for this role is $58,000 - $70,000. In addition to base pay, Rho offers equity, healthcare benefits and paid time off.
