Purpose:The VP of Retail Operations - Region 3 (California and Alaska) is responsible for translating the Chief Operating Officer's strategic vision into regional execution by developing and implementing operational plans that drive sales growth, EBITDA performance, and consistent operational standards across their assigned geography. The VP of Retail Operations achieves results through a multi-tier field leadership team, exceptional relationships with landlords and brand partners, and a sustained focus on team engagement and customer experience.
Essential Functions:
  • Creates and executes strategic plans and tactical actions; provides continuous input to the Operations strategy planning, contributes to business decisions, establishes and monitors improvement plans, and is the interface with all plans to ensure that objectives are met within or beyond set targets and performance indicators
  • Oversees regional P&L performance, holding Directors of Retail Operations accountable for location-level financial results; analyzes trends, identifies risks and opportunities, and partners with field leaders to develop and execute improvement plans that drive revenue and EBITDA growth
  • Leads with a business owner mindset across all operational, financial, and people decisions within their region; fosters a diverse, inclusive, high performing team spanning multiple layers of field leadership with a focus on people development, growth, and operational excellence
  • Champions the implementation and continuous improvement of structured retail operating models that establish clear accountability at every level of the field organization, from multi-unit leadership through store and shift management, ensuring consistent brand and operational standards across all locations
  • Develops the knowledge base and capabilities of leaders and staff within the region; builds an authentic culture of coaching, engagement, empathy, and trust while creating mentorship opportunities and cascading associate engagement at all levels
  • Establishes and maximizes working relationships with landlords within the region to ensure ongoing performance feedback and issue resolution
  • Advises and consults with SVPs, peer VPs of Operations, and field leaders to ensure all Landlord, ACDBE, and other JV partner, corporate staff, and brand relationships are maximized in order to further the company's business interests
  • Monitors business intelligence for operational trends, determines most effective intervention path, coaches for performance, and sets up opportunities for success
  • Develops and uses their understanding of the retail industry, including the unique dynamics of airport and travel retail, its merchandise and marketplace trends and challenges, and external influences that will affect retail business outcomes to anticipate and proactively prepare for opportunities and challenges within the region

Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Work Environment:
  • Education and Experience: The combination of education and professional experience must exceed 12 years:
  • In a leadership role: Requires 7 years of experience leading a senior level team of operations professionals engaged in developing and executing retail operations programs
  • In a technical role: Requires 12 years of experience engaged in developing and delivering retail operations programs, including direct accountability for multi-unit or regional P&L performance
  • A bachelor's degree in a program related to the functional area can count for 2 of the twelve-year requirement
  • An MBA or a master's level degree in a program related to the functional area can count for an additional 2 years of the twelve-year requirement
  • Industry experience: 3-5 years of Retail, F&B, and/or Hospitality experience; prior experience in an airport or travel retail environment preferred
  • Specialized Training:
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations and statutes
  • Specialized Skillset/Competencies/Traits:
  • Strong financial acumen with proven ability to own and oversee regional P&L performance including budget development, variance analysis, and expense optimization; navigates key financial metrics and drives KPI results through behavioral management rather than solely metric management and brings the same analytical discipline to all resource allocations decisions across the region
  • Exceptional and consistent communicator; can comfortably translate regional realities, risks, and opportunities into clear, credible executive-level context for SVP and senior leadership while cascading strategy, expectations, and standards downward with enough clarity and consistency that drives behavioral change at store level
  • Ability to lead and hold accountable a multi-tier field organization - spanning area, multi-unit, and store-level leadership - ensuring operational standards are consistently upheld, performance expectations are clearly set, and gaps are swiftly identified and addressed
  • Deep knowledge of the retail and consumer goods industry including travel retail concepts, multi-brand environments, and product and service quality standards; proven ability to ensure compliance and consistency across multiple brand standards with a multi-unit field organization
  • Successful track record managing highly visible relationships with both public and private clients and stakeholders (city councils, airport authorities, developers, landlords, DBEs, unions, and joint venture partners)
  • Highly advanced business acumen and also has the strategic mindset required to understand the long-term implications of operations management decisions and to advance the organization's goals
  • Demonstrated history of anticipating and balancing the needs of the business with the needs of complex stakeholders, the employee population, and individual circumstances
  • Demonstrated history of creating and maintaining positive work environments through coaching, developing, and leading teams to achieve common goals
  • Demonstrated experience exhibiting a continuous improvement mindset with the ability to optimize work processes and achieve positive results
  • Location and Travel:
  • The VP of Retail Operations is expected to reside within their assigned region to minimize travel time, distance, and expenses
  • Requires ability to travel up to 70% of the time
