Job description

Position Purpose
The Surgical Technologist for Labor and Delivery must be able to perform multiple procedures simultaneously or in succession. The technologist is responsible for supplying the operating room with the proper equipment and instrumentation that is needed for specific surgery. During the procedure the primary responsibility of the technologist is to maintain the sterility of the surgical field, to anticipate the needs of the surgeons, passing instruments in a timely fashion. Under direct supervision the technologist may be asked to perform the following duties such as, but not limited to, sponge or suction, hold retractors or instruments placed by the surgeons, apply electrocautery to clamps or bleeders, irrigation to operative site, cut suture, connect drains to suction apparatus, apply dressings to the wound. Once the procedure is completed, it is the responsibility of the technologist to care for the instrumentation for terminal cleaning and assist other team members with the terminal cleaning and prepping of the room for the following case. This position will provide any assistance needed to expedite the room turnover thereby providing optimum customer service to the surgeon, patient, anesthesiologist and co-workers.
In addition, the technologist is responsible for assisting in the delivery room, stocking Labor and Delivery PACU, Labor/Delivery/Recovery rooms (LDRs) Antepartum rooms, and OB/ED with the proper supplies, equipment, and instrumentation.
The technologist is cross trained to the Unit Clerk position to fill in as necessary. This position provides patient care of a technical nature under supervision of a licensed nurse. Incumbent performs multiple functions as a Surgical Technologist and performs Clerical Duties to support in the day-to-day operations of OB Services Department.
Nature and Scope
This position serves a patient population of Neonatal, Adolescent, Adult, and obstetric Trauma patients.
This position provides technical skills as a member of the surgical team, communicating with supervisors, charge nurses, other labor and delivery staff, transition nurses, NICU nurses, respiratory therapists, other surgery staff, surgeons, and anesthesiologists.
The demands on this position are very dynamic because of rapid changes in medical procedures, high-risk procedures including obstetrical Trauma and emergent surgeries requiring technical knowledge, instrumentation, equipment, policies, procedures, and because of surgeon's preferences in equipment, instruments, needles, and sutures.
This position has the freedom to decide the type of equipment and supplies required for the surgical care of the patient relative to the surgeon's preference cards and knowledge of the procedure, and to identify any breakdown in aseptic technique and take appropriate action.
This position ensures equipment is working properly before surgical procedure, cares for equipment after procedure, and is responsible for reporting equipment that is not working properly or is broken.
It is common to encounter potential hazards in the healthcare environment. Some of these hazards could include, but are not limited to: radiation, toxic chemicals, biological hazards, heat, noise, dust and stress. Renown Health has a Safety Management Program in place that addresses the issues.
Other related duties, flexible hours, on-call and overtime may be required.

Education:
Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to perform job duties safely and effectively. Formal technologist school program preferred. If no previous formal training, prerequisite classes of Anatomy & Physiology 1 & 2 and Microbiology, prior to hospital training class start date, preferred.
Experience:
Previous hospital/clinical experience preferred. 6 months experience as a Surgical Technologist preferred.
License(s):
None
Certification(s):
Current BLS certification by The American Heart Association standards is required. Certified Surgical Technologist is preferred.
If uncertified, incumbent is required to complete at least 15 hours of continuing education concerning the practice of surgical technology upon completion of first year of employment and on an annual basis thereafter. If certified, incumbent must maintain minimum qualifications in order to maintain certification.
Computer / Typing:
Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, and Word and have the ability to use the computer to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
