POSITION SUMMARY
The Assistant Director of Child Nutrition / CACFP provides leadership and operational oversight for the Child Nutrition Program serving Raul Yzaguirre Schools for Success campuses. This role is responsible for ensuring that nutritious, appealing meals are prepared and served in full compliance with the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
The position exercises considerable independent judgment and initiative in planning, coordinating, and supervising both human and physical resources necessary for effective program implementation. The Assistant Director supports Tejano Center's mission by ensuring equitable access to high-quality nutrition services that promote student health, attendance, and academic success.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university OR
A minimum of four (4) years of progressive experience in child nutrition services, food service operations, or program management
Preferred Qualifications
Experience administering CACFP, NSLP, or other USDA Child Nutrition Programs
Working knowledge of Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) Child Nutrition regulations
Supervisory experience in a school-based or institutional food service environment
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Program Administration & Operations
Plan, implement, and supervise daily operations of the RYSS nutrition program across assigned campuses.
Ensure CACFP meals are prepared and served on time to support instructional schedules and enrichment programming.
Collaborate with campus principals and administrators to promote a safe, welcoming, and orderly meal service environment.
Determine appropriate food quantities for daily service based on participation trends and program requirements.
Regulatory Compliance
Ensure compliance with all Tejano Center policies and applicable local, state, and federal regulations governing CACFP operations.
Establish and enforce procedures that align with USDA, TDA, and local health department requirements, including sanitation, food safety, production, and nutritional standards.
Administer federal meal programs in accordance with reimbursement, eligibility, and documentation requirements.
Prepare for and support state and federal program reviews, audits, and corrective action processes as required.
Oversee the accuracy and submission of CACFP reimbursement claims through TX-UNPS, ensuring compliance with all TDA requirements.
Review edit checks, participation data and supporting documentation prior to claim submission. Â
Inventory, Procurement & Fiscal Accountability
Manage food and supply inventories to ensure program continuity and fiscal responsibility.
Prepare requisitions and place food and supply orders in accordance with district procedures.
Receive and verify deliveries; resolve discrepancies by coordinating with vendors and appropriate Tejano Center staff.
Maintain accurate records of purchases, inventories, revenues, and expenditures.
Conduct and document monthly physical inventories of food and supplies.
Production Records & Reporting
Prepare and maintain required production records, participation counts, and CACFP documentation.
Ensure staff adhere to standardized recipes and approved food production procedures.
Monitor food preparation, service, and waste to ensure adequate availability while minimizing loss.
Accurately document food items prepared, served, and discarded on a daily basis.
PERSONNEL SUPERVISION AND LEADERSHIP
Directly supervise Nation School Lunch Program & CACFPP child nutrition staff.
Assign, train, and evaluate staff performance in accordance with Tejano Center policies and expectations.
Ensure adherence to food safety standards, work schedules, and operational procedures.
Provide coaching, guidance, and constructive feedback to support employee growth and accountability.
Address routine and non-routine personnel issues promptly and professionally, escalating matters as appropriate.
COLLABORATION & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Work collaboratively with the Nutrition Director to support district-wide child nutrition goals and initiatives.
Communicate effectively with campus leadership, families, and internal departments to support program success.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the Nutrition Director in support of Tejano Center and RYSS operations.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is performed primarily in school kitchens, cafeterias, and food storage areas.
Requires standing for extended periods and the ability to lift and move food and supply items.
Position may require adjusted or evening hours to support programming.
