Job description

Roanoke County Public Schools is currently seeking a Lead Nutrition Associate for Cave Spring High School. This position is a 188 day contract, 7 hours/day, eligible for benefits on the RCPS Pay Plan Grade 110 beginning August 10, 2026.
Interviews will begin immediately and the position will remain open until filled.
Position Description/Job Summary:
The Lead Nutrition Associate will provide services for many aspects of the site Child Nutrition Program (CNP) operation. The job functions include assisting the Nutrition Manager in administering the program, cooking, cleaning, sanitation, and serving the food to meet the financial and nutritional needs as they relate to the program. The Lead Nutrition Associate will partner with others in the school site to provide an environment that supports healthy food habits while maintaining program integrity, sustainability, and customer service.
Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks:
Lead Duties:
• Under guidance of Nutrition Manager, oversees food production and work rotation schedules
• Assists Nutrition Manager with breakfast preparation and service
• Serves as a backup when manager is absent, so is responsible for the following tasks:
o Prepares daily deposit and takes deposit to the bank
o Completes daily paperwork
o Enters orders for food and supplies
o Submits reports to Nutrition Office
• Plans and implements merchandizing and marketing techniques to enhance student acceptability
• Receives, stores, handles, prepares, and serves food to meet department established standards
• Assists Nutrition Manager with monthly inventory counts and ensures products are date marked when received and rotated according to First In, First Out principles
• Possesses and maintains a Serv/Safe Certification for Food Safety from the National Restaurant Association
Associate Duties:
• Follows production schedules and work assignments
• Implements planned menus using efficient production techniques, including production documentation, to monitor student acceptance
• Practices and implements good customer service standards
• Follows sanitation and safety procedures that comply with federal, state and local regulations
• Operates, cleans, and sanitizes commercial food production equipment
• Monitors equipment and refers to Nutrition Manager for maintenance in a timely manner
• Assists in communicating program information to encourage support from students, staff, parents, administrators, and community
• Attends job-related and support training classes and meetings
• Flexibility to assume job duties at another site when needed
• Performs other duties which are deemed necessary for the efficient operation of the program

Education and Experience:
Possess a high school diploma or equivalent high school certificate
One (1) year school food service experience or related institutional experience

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must have the ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to perform all aspects related to food preparation and equipment use. Ability to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal levels; physical agility to lift/carry up to 50 pounds; to bend, to stoop, to climb stairs, to walk, to reach overhead, and to use repetitive motion in the same position for extended periods of time. Must have the ability to wear protective attire in the food service operation. Ability to work in kitchens that exhibit moist and hot environments.
