Job Summary:

The role of the Nursing Simulation Centre (NSC) Technician is to support the day-to-day operations of the NSC and simulation program. The NSC Technician assists with preparation and dismantling of equipment for simulation scenarios, problem-solving of operational issues, and routine equipment maintenance and repair. This person assists with the programming and operation of mannequins as well as the recording of simulation scenarios. The NSC Technician provides basic technical support and education in the use of the equipment and mannequins used in medium to high fidelity simulations to educators and students. The NSC Technician reports to the Division Chair, Nursing and collaborates with the lab demonstrators to maintain safe, effective and collegial use of the space for nursing education. The NSC Technician is an integral member of the NSC team with duties and responsibilities related to both simulation and general NSC operations.


Job Description:

Duties & Responsibilities:

In support of the day-to-day Nursing Simulation Centre, assists with simulation and skills classes by performing specific duties such as:


1. Simulation and technical support:

  • Operates a variety of simulation, AV, recording technology;
  • Programs mannequins for simulation scenarios;
  • Manages storage and retrieval of recorded sessions;
  • Prepares scenario props including standardized patients;
  • Creates scenario moulage;
  • Prepares control rooms for simulation activity;
  • Coordinates and participates in technical training and provides technical support;
  • Provides technical assistance and oversees lab equipment including preparation, operation, routine maintenance and repair, programming, performance testing and safety monitoring;
  • Provides technical recommendations for simulation improvement;
  • Assesses system problems and report issues to AC NSC and collaborate in a solution-oriented approach.


2. Maintenance and lab equipment, supplies, and inventory:

  • Orders supplies and equipment as needed for inventory;
  • Liaises with Purchasing regarding purchases, including completing, submitting and reviewing orders;
  • Maintains supplies, materials, and equipment such as the AV equipment dedicated to the NSC;
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment including an ongoing summary of consumable supply costs;
  • Reviews supply catalogues, suggesting items, summarizing pros and cons including the cost for potential purchase;
  • Assists the lab demonstrators to develop a list of capital equipment requests that support simulation, student practice and learning;
  • Cleans, lubricates and exchanges worn or used equipment parts/items with replacement items/parts on mannequins or equipment;
  • Conducts ongoing preventive maintenance and repair of all simulation equipment;
  • Updates educators on maintenance schedules, equipment related issues and alternative processes;
  • Cleans, lubricates and exchanges worn or used equipment parts/items with replacement items/parts on mannequins or equipment;
  • Sets up, dismantles, cleans and stores supplies, materials, equipment, and instructional aids;
  • Maintains the NSC to ensure a safe working environment for students, lab demonstrators and educators.

3. Other:

  • Maintains current knowledge of simulation equipment catalogs and operation manuals;
  • Maintains confidentiality related to students, educators, lab demonstrators and records;
  • Assists with special projects or initiatives as needed;
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Qualifications Required:


Education

Bachelor's degree in computer science, technology, or health-related field preferred: associate degree in computer science, technology or health science.

  • Minimum two (2) years of related work experience.
  • Experience with the use of related software and hardware, including video and audio recording equipment.
  • Experience operating a variety of nursing simulation equipment, a desired asset.
  • Experience with demonstrating the use of equipment to others, preferably students and educators.

Skills & Abilities

  • Proficient with hardware such as PC and Mac computers, video and audio recording equipment.
  • Proficient with software required to operate equipment.
  • Detail-oriented with organizational, planning and priority setting skills.
  • Written and verbal communication skills to facilitate collaborative working relationships and NSC processes.
  • Presentation skills to educate students and educators on the appropriate use of equipment.
  • Accepts and responds positively to constructive feedback.

Working Conditions

  • Able to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position such as walking, standing, and lifting or moving equipment.
  • Position is not subject to the compressed work schedule.
  • Maintain flexibility and reliability to variable scheduling and assignments.

Hours & Days of Work: Hours may vary between 8:30am - 4:30pm Monday to Friday. Schedule for this position is flexible.
