Nursing Residency Programs information

What are nursing residency programs?

Nursing residency programs are structured transition programs designed to support newly graduated nurses as they move from academia into professional clinical practice. These programs typically last from several months to a year and provide mentorship, additional training, and hands-on experience in a hospital or clinical setting. The goal is to help new nurses build confidence, improve clinical skills, and adapt to the fast-paced healthcare environment. Participation in a residency program can lead to higher job satisfaction and retention rates among nurses.

What can new nurses expect from the mentorship and support structure in a nursing residency program?

Nursing residency programs typically provide new nurses with dedicated preceptors, regular feedback sessions, and peer support groups to ease the transition from student to practicing nurse. Residents often work closely with experienced nurses who guide them through clinical procedures, documentation, and patient communication. This structure helps new nurses build confidence, refine their skills, and adapt to the fast-paced hospital environment. Additionally, many programs offer classroom learning and simulation labs to reinforce clinical knowledge, ensuring a well-rounded foundation for a successful nursing career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in nursing residency programs, and why are they important?

To thrive in Nursing Residency Programs, you need a BSN or ADN degree, an active RN license, and foundational clinical skills in patient care and assessment. Familiarity with electronic health records, hospital protocols, and common clinical equipment is typically required. Strong communication, adaptability, and teamwork are crucial for integrating into new healthcare environments and supporting collaborative care. These skills and qualifications are essential for building confidence, competence, and safe nursing practice as you transition from student to professional nurse.

Job description

Job Summary and Responsibilities

Graduate nurses are welcomed from all over the country with the next cohort beginning February 15th, 2027. The Nurse Residency Program (NRP) is designed to support the new graduate nurse during the transition from the student role to the licensed Registered Nurse (RN) role. All St. Luke's Health- Memorial nurse residents receive ongoing professional and educational support from a team of education specialists, nursing leaders, preceptors and mentors. Through in-person and virtually-enhanced education and support, your critical thinking skills, evidence-based decision-making skills, engagement, stress management capabilities, and leadership skills will be developed, nurtured, and optimized. Our residency program accelerates nursing competency by providing in-depth experiences, education, and support during the Nurse Resident’s first year. A competency-based curriculum coupled with trained preceptors and active mentorship capitalizes on American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Accreditation design and innovative, contemporary, and evidence-based practices. Newly licensed registered nurses (RNs) are supported by CommonSpirit's National Nurse Residency Program as they transition to practice at one of our facilities. The program consists of a comprehensive, evidence-based clinical orientation in addition to a 12-month transition-to-practice platform.

Graduate Nurse Residents are responsible for the delivery of excellence in patient care through assessing, formulating nursing diagnoses and establishing goals, planning and implementing intervention, and evaluating patient care outcomes.

At the conclusion of the first year in practice, nurse residents report enhanced self-confidence in providing excellent patient care and function with practice that is in alignment with St. Luke's mission, vision and values. Former nurse residents also serve as mentors and unit leaders, sit on a variety of nursing councils and many are seeking advanced degrees and certifications.
