What does a Nursing Intern do?

A Nursing Intern is a student or recent graduate who works in a healthcare setting to gain practical, hands-on experience under the supervision of licensed nurses and other healthcare professionals. They assist with patient care, perform basic clinical tasks, observe medical procedures, and help with administrative duties. The goal is to apply classroom knowledge in real-world scenarios, develop essential nursing skills, and prepare for a future career as a registered nurse.

What is the difference between Nursing Intern vs Nursing Assistant?

AspectNursing InternNursing Assistant
CredentialsTypically enrolled in nursing programs, may have completed courseworkUsually requires certification or training, but less formal education
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, supervised clinical settingsHospitals, nursing homes, long-term care facilities
Job RoleAssists with patient care under supervision, observes clinical proceduresProvides basic patient care, assists with daily activities
Employer & IndustryHealthcare facilities, nursing schoolsHealthcare facilities, long-term care

While both roles involve patient care, Nursing Interns are typically nursing students gaining clinical experience, whereas Nursing Assistants provide direct patient care with more hands-on responsibilities. The roles often overlap in healthcare settings, but their training and scope differ.

How do Nursing Interns typically collaborate with registered nurses and other healthcare team members during their internship?

Nursing Interns work closely under the supervision of registered nurses and often interact with a multidisciplinary healthcare team, including physicians, therapists, and support staff. They assist with patient care tasks, observe procedures, and participate in team meetings or shift handovers. This collaborative environment helps interns develop communication and teamwork skills, receive real-time feedback, and gain a better understanding of the workflow in a clinical setting. Building strong professional relationships during the internship can also lead to mentorship opportunities and potential job offers upon program completion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Nursing Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nursing Intern, you need foundational knowledge in nursing principles, basic patient care skills, and enrollment in or completion of an accredited nursing program. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and standard medical equipment is often required, and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is typically expected. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team make candidates stand out. These skills are crucial for providing safe, effective patient care and for building the experience and confidence needed for future nursing roles.
