This LPN/RN will assist in the management of inmate nursing care and emergency treatment.

Primary Functions:

  • Works within individual license scope of practice in accordance with correctional policy and procedure.
  • Provide inmate health care based on needs assessment and nursing care plan pertaining to mental health status and physical status.
  • Gather information for preliminary health assessment to inmate patient on arrival.
  • Ability to evaluate illicit drug and alcohol withdrawal to provide the appropriate care and detoxification per policy.
  • Ability to evaluate and address inmate medical concerns for acute and chronic illnesses or injury by contacting the MD/PA.
  • Following preliminary health assessment, assist in assigning inmates to appropriate housing unit, following protocols to check inmates on a daily or as needed basis and continually coordinate inmate(s) medical information to all others as appropriate.
  • Coordinates and/or administers medication, therapeutic agents, and treatments, to inmate patients.
  • Assist in maintaining both an accurate inventory of medications(s) to ensure ample quantities for inmates:
  • Proper implementation of MD/PA orders or prescriptions.
  • Order required medications, and perform the dispensing of medications to inmates.
  • In the jail pharmacy computer data base maintain new and revised medications.
  • Maintain inmate patient Medical Records Record with clear concise and accurate information pertaining to all treatments performed and/or medications administered. Record any/all interactions with inmate patients pertaining to the health and wellness and/or safety of the inmate patient, staff and facility.
  • Reports reactions to treatments and medications, as well as changes in the inmate’s emotional or physical condition:
  • Report all/any medication errors immediately to the Nursing Supervisor, MD/PA and Shift Supervisor.
  • Gives and receives reports as requested or required with the Nursing Supervisor, Nursing staff, Mental Health staff and Correctional staff/supervisor.
  • Collaborates with facility care providers and community health care providers to ensure continuity, timeliness and appropriateness of care to inmate patients.
  • Assists MD/PA with medical treatments.
  • Obtains specimens from inmate patients as ordered for diagnostic testing.
  • Responds to emergency situations as requested or directed:

Immediate treatment of injury and acute illness

Determine if life-threatening injury exists

Stabilize inmate patients for transport with the provision of first aid and basic life support

Communicate/report with MD/PA, Nursing Supervisor, Corrections Shift Supervisor, and EMS

  • Enforces inmate patient education and/or discharge planning.
  • Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate manner.
  • Responsible for following facility safety and security guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.
  • Upholds HIPAA regulations.
