What is an NQA job?

An NQA (Non-Destructive Quality Assurance) job typically involves inspecting, testing, and evaluating materials or products to ensure they meet quality and safety standards. Professionals in this role use various methods, such as visual inspections, ultrasonic testing, or X-ray analysis, to detect defects or inconsistencies. They often work in industries like manufacturing, aerospace, construction, and automotive. The goal is to ensure compliance with regulations and maintain product reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Nqa position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a NQA (Nondestructive Quality Assurance) professional, you generally need a background in engineering or a related technical field, strong analytical skills, and knowledge of quality assurance standards. Familiarity with nondestructive testing (NDT) methods, such as ultrasonic, radiographic, or magnetic particle inspections, as well as certifications like ASNT Level II or III, are highly valued in this role. Attention to detail, effective problem-solving abilities, and strong communication are crucial soft skills for accurately identifying and reporting quality concerns. These skills and qualifications ensure rigorous quality standards are maintained without compromising safety or operational efficiency.

What are some typical challenges faced by NQA professionals in their daily work?

NQA professionals often encounter challenges such as detecting subtle defects in complex materials, keeping up with evolving industry standards, and documenting findings clearly for various stakeholders. They must balance thorough inspection with maintaining production schedules, which can be demanding when timelines are tight. Additionally, working collaboratively with engineers, production staff, and quality managers requires clear communication and a proactive approach to problem-solving. These challenges make the NQA role both engaging and vital to ensuring product integrity and compliance in critical industries.

Job description

Quality Engineer / Quality Assurance Engineer

*Only considering applications with nuclear or nuclear adjacent experience

NuVision Engineering (NVE), Inc.
Locations: Pittsburgh, PA or Mooresville, NC

About NuVision Engineering

NuVision Engineering (NVE), Inc. is a project-based engineering services company supporting the commercial nuclear power and government nuclear sectors, including nuclear remediation, radioactive waste management, and specialty nuclear services. NVE does not manufacture products; instead, we provide engineering, project execution, field services, and technical support under rigorous nuclear quality programs.

Position Summary

NVE is seeking a Quality Engineer / Quality Assurance Engineer to own, implement, and maintain our nuclear Quality Assurance Program across engineering and project execution activities. This role is focused on procedural compliance, program effectiveness, and requirements flow-down, ensuring that NVE personnel and subcontractors perform work in accordance with ASME NQA-1 and customer-specific quality requirements.

This position is not a manufacturing quality or inspection role. The successful candidate will be experienced in project-based nuclear QA, working alongside engineering and project teams to ensure quality is built into the work through proper planning, procedures, and documentation.

Key Responsibilities

Nuclear Quality Program Oversight

  • Maintain, implement, and continuously improve NVE’s ASME NQA-1-based Quality Assurance Program
  • Ensure compliance with NQA-1, 10 CFR 50 Appendix B (as applicable), and customer-specific QA requirements
  • Manage QA procedures, work instructions, and supporting documentation

Project Quality Support

  • Work closely with Project Managers, Engineers, and Field Personnel to integrate QA requirements into project execution
  • Support project planning activities including quality plans, procedure selection, and requirement flow-down
  • Ensure contract, regulatory, and customer QA requirements are maintained throughout the project lifecycle

Procedure & Documentation Control

  • Develop, revise, and maintain QA and project support procedures
  • Ensure proper document control, records management, and configuration management
  • Review project documentation for compliance with applicable QA requirements

Supplier & Subcontractor Oversight

  • Review supplier and subcontractor documentation for compliance with purchase orders and QA requirements
  • Support supplier qualification, oversight, and surveillance activities (as required)
  • Provide QA support for vendor audits and evaluations

Audits & Assessments

  • Plan, perform, and support internal and external audits
  • Support customer, regulatory, and third-party audits
  • Track audit findings, corrective actions, and effectiveness reviews

Corrective Action & Continuous Improvement

  • Support the corrective action program, including issue identification, root cause analysis, and corrective action development
  • Monitor quality trends and program effectiveness
  • Recommend improvements to processes and procedures based on lessons learned

Safety, Health and Environmental

  • Ensure quality activities are performed in accordance with applicable Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) requirements, and identify, document, and escalate SHE concerns encountered during quality work
  • Support integration of SHE considerations into quality procedures, project plans, and supplier oversight activities, and reinforce safe work practices during QA-related engagements

Qualifications

Required

  • 2+ years of Quality Assurance experience in the commercial nuclear industry or government nuclear work
  • Hands-on experience working under ASME NQA-1 and/or 10 CFR 50 Appendix B
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical field
  • Experience working in a project-based engineering or services organization
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and contractual requirements
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred

  • ASME or ANSI Lead Auditor certification
  • Experience supporting engineering services, field services, or project execution (not manufacturing)
  • Familiarity with customer-specific nuclear QA flow-down requirements

Travel

  • Up to 10% travel, domestic and occasional international, to support projects, audits, and customer engagements
