What is Northern Rock?

Northern Rock was a British bank that specialized in mortgage lending and savings accounts. Founded in 1965 as a building society, it became a bank in 1997. Northern Rock became widely known during the 2007–2008 financial crisis when it faced a severe liquidity crisis, leading to the first run on a British bank in over a century. The UK government nationalized Northern Rock in 2008 to protect customers and stabilize the financial system. In 2012, its good assets were sold to Virgin Money, and the remaining parts were wound down.
