Job description

 
POSITION SUMMARY: 

The Nordic Center Staff member plays an essential role in the daily operations of Snow Mountain Ranch’s award-winning Nordic Center, which offers over 100 kilometers of groomed ski trails and provides guests with a world-class Nordic skiing experience in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Responsibilities include assisting guests with ski rentals and sales, issuing trail passes, maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the Center, teaching beginner to intermediate ski lessons, and supporting special events such as races and group activities. 

This position supports the mission-driven work of the YMCA of the Rockies – Snow Mountain Ranch, a family and group conference and retreat center with a residential camp serving approximately 50,000 guests annually.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Open and close the Nordic Center according to established procedures, ensuring the facility is staffed and operational from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM as scheduled. 

  • Follow all Nordic Center policies and uphold YMCA standards of professionalism and guest service throughout each shift. 

  • Adhere to assigned work schedules and maintain accurate timekeeping records. 

  • Provide exceptional customer service by offering accurate information about the Nordic Center, trail conditions, rental equipment, and other Snow Mountain Ranch activities. 

  • Maintain general product knowledge of retail items, ski equipment, and guest services to effectively assist visitors. 

  • Conduct and record ski lessons for beginner to intermediate level guests using both classical and skate techniques. 

  • Ensure the cleanliness, organization, and visual appeal of the Nordic Center and surrounding areas. 

  • Accurately complete required paperwork, lesson documentation, and rental records in a timely manner. 

  • Operate point-of-sale systems for retail transactions, rentals, and trail passes. 

  • Answer phones promptly and professionally, providing information or taking detailed messages for staff. 

  • Arrive prepared for work, demonstrating readiness to transition quickly between customer service and instruction duties. 

  • Support Nordic Center events such as races, clinics, and community activities as needed. 

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Nordic Center Director or Assistant Director. 

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Must be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English. 

  • Current First Aid and CPR certification required (training provided if needed). 

  • Demonstrated proficiency in Nordic skiing, including both classical and skate techniques. 

  • Ability to teach beginner and intermediate-level lessons following U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association (USSA) Level 100 guidelines or equivalent. 

  • Practical working knowledge of waxing techniques for both classical and skate skis. 

  • Ability to provide clear and accurate technique and waxing advice to guests. 

  • Familiarity with the Snow Mountain Ranch trail system and a genuine enthusiasm for Nordic skiing. 

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a professional and courteous demeanor toward guests, coworkers, and other staff members.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.   

  • Work is primarily outdoors in a mountain environment with variable weather conditions including cold, snow, and wind. 

  • Requires standing for long periods, walking on snow-covered terrain, and performing moderate physical activity such as lifting up to 40 lbs. 

  • Must be able to ski confidently on groomed and ungroomed trails. 

  • Weekend and holiday availability required during the winter season. 

  • Work involves frequent guest interaction and maintaining a positive attitude in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
