Job description

Under the supervision of licensed staff Physical Therapist, the Licensed Physical Therapy Assistant carries out a program of corrective exercise and treatment for assigned patients. The Assistant helps the Physical Therapist during patient testing, evaluations, and procedures, and provides treatment, exercise, instruction, and demonstration for patients. Additionally, the Assistant maintains accurate documentation on patient progress, discusses patient status with Physical Therapists, transports patients to and from examination areas, participates in educational programs, and maintains departmental records and reports in an effort to keep management informed of the department's operating status and ensure the provision of quality health care services by the department and hospital. The Assistant demonstrates compassion, understanding, and respect for the physical and psychological needs relevant to the age of the patient served.

Education: Associate's Degree

Experience: Successful completion of an approved Physical Therapy training program

Certification/ License: BLS Certification; State licensed Physical Therapy Assistant

  • Patient Care
    • Efficiently administers high quality physical therapy care programs as planned, directed, and supervised by a licensed Physical Therapist and strives to promote the health and well-being of all patients. Treats patients with compassion and dignity throughout the therapeutic process.
    • Provides compassionate and dignified patient care by assisting in patient transfer to and from department examination area and maintains communication in the patient's medical record following facility guidelines in a prudent and efficient manner.
  • Quality
    • Performs high quality electro-stimulation, hot pack, and ultrasound therapy under the supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist in an effort to alleviate patient pain and facilitate the therapeutic and diagnostic process.
    • Maintains high quality and accurate documentation on patient progress and goals following hospital guidelines and develops appointment schedules in a manner that maximizes the positive therapeutic impact for the patient.
    • Participates in educational programs, in-service meetings, and training sessions in an effort to share his/her own expertise with others and further the quality of education and personal growth provided to new personnel, volunteers, and interning students.
  • Collaboration and Partnership
    • Assists Physical Therapists during patient testing and evaluation and carries out corrective exercise programs and treatments for assigned patients in an effort to ensure that high quality patient care is provided.
    • Manages patient case load by scheduling patients and performing physical therapy treatments and efficiently reports patients' status to a Physical Therapist in order to promote health care quality and optimize the utilization of staff time and resources.
    • Develops required reports and maintains accurate records for use in evaluating departmental performance. Identifies ways of improving current services and consults with supervisors on employee and operational issues and problems.
