Non Union Key Grip information

What industry employs the best boys and key grips?

The film and television industry employs the best boys and key grips, who are essential members of the camera and lighting departments. These roles typically work on movie sets, TV productions, and commercial shoots, often requiring knowledge of equipment, safety standards, and teamwork. Employment is usually through production companies, studios, or union organizations such as IATSE.

What is the easiest job to get on a movie set?

Entry-level positions such as production assistants or set runners are generally the easiest jobs to obtain on a movie set, as they often require minimal experience and are available through networking or staffing agencies. These roles provide exposure to the industry and can lead to more specialized positions like a non-union key grip with experience and skills in equipment handling and safety protocols.

What is the difference between Non Union Key Grip vs Union Key Grip?

AspectNon Union Key GripUnion Key Grip
CredentialsTypically no union certifications requiredUnion certifications often required, such as IATSE membership
Work EnvironmentIndependent or freelance productions, non-union setsUnionized film and TV productions with collective bargaining
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in independent, low-budget, or non-union projectsCommon in major studio, network, and unionized productions

The main difference between a Non Union Key Grip and a Union Key Grip lies in union membership and certification requirements. Non Union Key Grips work primarily on independent or non-union projects without union mandates, while Union Key Grips are part of a union like IATSE, working on larger, unionized productions. Both roles require technical skills, but union status influences work conditions, pay, and job security.

How much does a key grip get paid?

A key grip typically earns between $500 and $1,000 per day on set, depending on experience, union status, and project budget. Experienced key grips working on major productions can earn higher daily rates, and many are members of industry unions that set minimum pay standards.

What jobs pay 2000 a day?

In the film industry, a non-union key grip can earn around $2,000 or more per day for high-budget productions, especially when working overtime or on large-scale projects. Such roles require extensive experience, specialized skills with equipment like camera rigs and lighting, and often involve long hours on set. Compensation varies based on project size, location, and individual negotiation, but top-tier grips can reach this daily rate in certain circumstances.
