Job description

Our client, a nonprofit organization located in Walnut Creek, CA, is looking for a Controller to be responsible to plan, manage and control the activities of the Organization. The position reports to the Executive Director. On-going tasks will include managing the processes of general accounting, supervision of annual audit and tax return and various reporting requirements. The right candidate will be expected to exhibit the highest professional standards, ethical principles, and attention to detail while working on numerous routine and ad hoc accounting support functions. Other valued attributes that we are seeking are a strong work ethic, capacity to get things done independently, and consistent performance with a sense of urgency and commitment.

  1. ACCOUNTING RELATED


o    Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including A/P, A/R, payroll, and general ledger maintenance.

o    Maintain accurate records of financial transactions in accordance with GAAP.

o    Prepare monthly bank reconciliations on a timely basis

o    Ensure timely and accurate processing of all financial transactions and reporting.

o    Cash Flow Management

1.       Ensure proper management of cash flow, liquidity, and working capital.

2.       Oversee banking relationships and optimize cash reserves for operations and capital projects.

o    Grant Management & Reporting

1.       Ensure the accurate tracking and reporting of grant funds and donations, ensuring compliance with donor restrictions and funding requirements.

2.       Work with Development to monitor donor and grantor obligations and reporting.

o    Internal Controls & Process Improvement

1.       Establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard the organization’s assets and ensure financial accuracy.

2.       Identify areas for process improvement and efficiency, developing recommendations and implementing them.

o    Supervise and mentor one or more employees, prefer previous supervisory experience.

o    Understanding of Blackbaud Financial Edge software with hands-on use preferred.

2.       Financial Reporting & Compliance

o    Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.

o    Oversee the preparation of the annual audit and work with external auditors.

o    Ensure compliance with all applicable financial regulations, laws, and guidelines (e.g., 990 filings, state and federal grants).

3.       Budgeting & Forecasting (FP&A)

o    Lead the budgeting process along with the Executive Director, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and ensuring appropriate allocation of resources.

o    Develop and manage quarterly and annual financial forecasts.

o    Produce monthly budget variance reports, including working with department heads to track expenditures and revenue variances by department.

o    Participate in strategic planning discussions, providing financial insights and analysis.

4.        Management of employee benefits programs.

o    Oversee Health Insurance plan and maintain appropriate employee participation and deduction list.
o    Oversee Dental insurance plan and maintain appropriate employee participation and deduction list.
o    Oversee the administration of leaves of absence, ensuring adherence to applicable policies and legal requirements
o    Work with HR on the provision of benefits and assist in any way needed.

OPERATIONS RELATED

  1. Overseeing day-to-day operational processes across departments such as finance, accounting, education, logistics, , and customer service
  2. Develop and implement operational policies, procedures, and standards to improve efficiency and maintain quality.
  3. Coordinating with department heads to plan resource allocation and forecast operational needs.
  4. Ensuring compliance with legal, regulatory, and safety standards.


SPECIAL PROJECT

The current model is hybrid, partially outsourced to a third party (FASS) and this position will assist in transitioning that work in-house to be performed by accounting team.

1.       Work with FASS to understand work provided by their team and develop a plan and process to add all functions to current team duties.

2.       Work with FASS to determine how to transfer ownership of Blackbaud Financial Edge licensure from FASS to the Organization.   This may require an implementation of Blackbaud under Lindsay’s licensure rights.


Qualifications/Requirements:

  • B.S. Accounting; CPA and/or MBA in Finance preferred
  • 8 years accounting, 5 years nonprofit management
  • At least five years experience as Accounting Manager and/or Controller or equivalent, with a budget of at least $5 million
  • Supervisory, coaching and mentorship experience
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work with leadership and management in a professional manner.
  • Proficient in Microsoft office, Excel, Word.
  • Responsive to the needs of both internal and external parties
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Technologically savvy, with an ability to point to examples of having worked with IT staff to develop and implement new processes and systems that increased efficiency
  • Flexible and a self-starter; able to multi-task while also being highly detail-oriented
  • Excellent people skills, with experience collaborating in a multi-disciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team
