What is a NOLS job?

A NOLS job refers to a position with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), an organization that offers wilderness education and leadership training. NOLS jobs range from field instructors leading outdoor expeditions to administrative, logistics, and support roles. Field instructors teach outdoor skills, risk management, and leadership in remote environments. Other jobs include gear managers, program coordinators, and educators in areas such as wilderness medicine. Employees at NOLS are passionate about experiential education and outdoor leadership.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Nols position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) instructor, you need extensive outdoor skills, wilderness first aid certification, and practical teaching experience. Familiarity with technical gear such as climbing equipment, navigation tools, and communication devices is often required, along with certifications like Wilderness First Responder (WFR). Strong leadership, effective communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure set top NOLS instructors apart. These abilities are crucial for ensuring both participant safety and an engaging learning experience in dynamic wilderness environments.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a NOLS instructor during a course?

As a NOLS instructor, your daily responsibilities include leading groups on backcountry routes, teaching outdoor skills such as navigation, cooking, and campsite management, and facilitating leadership development among students. Instructors also manage risk by making safety decisions, monitoring group well-being, and responding to weather or medical situations as needed. Collaboration with co-instructors is common, and you’ll rotate responsibilities to ensure all students receive diverse mentorship. This dynamic role demands adaptability and proactive communication to support both team cohesion and positive student outcomes.
