Job description

Job Title: Temporary Meter Reader

Locations Available:

Plymouth, IN

Kokomo, IN

Goshen, IN

Fort Wayne, IN

Shift: 7:00am-3:30pm ET

Job Summary

Read meters, record consumption, maintain assigned meter books.

Successful bidders who are not qualified will be required to attend five (5) days of training at the LaPorte Training Center. Also, employee will be required to drive his/her personal vehicle.

Successful bidders into this position must successfully complete Aptitude Tests per Article 10, Section 25, except employees who are qualified and currently holding the bid classification will not be required to take the test.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Accurately read gas and electric meters; read and reset demand indicating hands; read and correct time on off-peak meters; use customers' keys or other special arrangements where required.
  • Record meter readings, compute consumption, and leave self-reading card when required.
  • Keep meter reading sheets in assigned meter books in proper account number sequence.
  • Converse with customers when necessary, and refer complaints, requests, or inquiries to department supervisor.
  • Record special hazards on meter reading sheets to facilitate future meter readings.
  • Report gas leaks to service department immediately.
  • Report daily, all unusual conditions needing attention; such as, illegal connections, bad service connections, broken meter glass, vacant premises where service is still on, errors in revenue classifications, unusual consumption, and meter changes not yet in meter book.
  • Make special trips to reread meters and obtain readings of meters which were missed on regular schedules.
  • Prepare departmental reports as required.
  • Operate Company or private vehicle in performance of duties to transport meter readers.
  • Take reasonable care of Company tools and equipment that are assigned to him during working hours.
  • Keep assigned equipment work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Report irregularities and abnormal conditions.
  • Direct and instruct employees assigned to work with him.
  • Assist in the training of other employees.
  • Perform similar or less skilled work in this classification or, when the diversity of work load requires, perform similar or less skilled work in equal or lower classifications.

  • Perform duties in accordance with the Company's safety rules and operating regulations and practices.
  • Complete any reports and forms used in connection with the performance of duties.

Required Qualifications for Position

  • Have a High School Diploma, or the equivalent.
  • Be able to write figures legibly.
