How much do no experience additive manufacturing jobs pay per year?

As of May 31, 2026, the average yearly pay for no experience additive manufacturing in the United States is $78,333.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $50,000.00 and $96,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an entry-level Additive Manufacturing role, and why are they important?

To thrive in an entry-level Additive Manufacturing position, you need a basic understanding of manufacturing principles, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn, with a high school diploma or equivalent often sufficient. Familiarity with 3D printing equipment, CAD software, and safety protocols is typically required, though on-the-job training is common for those with no prior experience. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication help you adapt quickly and contribute to the production process. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining quality standards, ensuring safety, and supporting efficient workflow in a technology-driven environment.

What are the typical entry-level responsibilities for someone starting in additive manufacturing with no prior experience?

Entry-level roles in additive manufacturing for candidates with no prior experience often involve supporting machine operation, post-processing finished parts, and assisting with quality checks. You'll likely work closely with more experienced technicians or engineers, learning how to prepare materials, set up and maintain 3D printers, and monitor print jobs for errors. Over time, you'll gain hands-on experience with various additive manufacturing technologies and software, laying a solid foundation for career advancement in this rapidly growing field.

What is additive manufacturing and can I start a career in it with no experience?

Additive manufacturing, often called 3D printing, is the process of creating objects by building them layer by layer using digital designs. Many entry-level roles in this field require little to no prior experience, as employers often provide on-the-job training for tasks such as operating 3D printers, preparing print files, or quality checking finished products. Enthusiasm for technology, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn are valuable traits for beginners. Starting with internships, workshops, or online courses can also help you gain basic knowledge and improve your job prospects.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

In additive manufacturing, roles such as senior 3D printing specialists or manufacturing engineers can earn around $10,000 per month with extensive experience and specialized skills. These positions often require proficiency with CAD software, knowledge of materials, and experience operating advanced 3D printers, but may not always require a formal degree if compensated through expertise and project management abilities.

Along with the world's leading technology companies, many of which are household names, we help solve their most difficult material science challenges, enabling technologies for a more connected, sustainable, and convenient world.

We're looking for material difference-makers to join our growing team. Interested? Learn more at www.veeco.com/careers.

Overview:

The Additive Manufacturing Engineer will play a key role in advancing Veeco's use of Additive Manufacturing (AM) within complex semiconductor capital equipment. This individual will be the DfAM (Design for Additive Manufacturing) subjectmatter expert, partnering with product design, New Product Introduction (NPI), and manufacturing teams to introduce AM-enabled designs that improve performance, simplify supply chains, reduce cost, and accelerate development cycles.

You will lead AM component design, validate process feasibility, and guide parts from concept through production using advanced AM modalities such as LPBF, EBM, DED, Binder Jet, SLA, and FDM. This role is ideal for a creative, technically strong design engineer who excels at applying AM-specific design principles and driving cross-functional alignment.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as AM design subject matter expert in various AM modalities (L-PBF, EBM, DED, SLA, FDM, etc.).
  • Support cost and businesscase evaluations comparing additive vs. conventional manufacturing, including part consolidation, lead time, and lifecycle cost impacts
  • Apply AM-specific design principles including topology optimization, lattice structures, consolidation of assemblies, thermal management features, and internal flow path design.
  • Partner with mechanical design teams to identify components suitable for AM, redesign legacy parts, and integrate AM into new product architectures.
  • Partner with Product Design teams to complete designs that maximize the benefits of using AM while negotiating tolerance and other capabilities of the technology
  • Work with AM vendors and Veeco's internal AM capabilities to generate SOPs, process control documentation, and build files (Magics, nTop, SolidWorks, etc.).
  • Support transition of AM components from prototype to pilot and production, including definition of process windows, repeatability requirements, and manufacturing handoff
  • Own AM projects from concept through production: DfAM build prep printing post-processing qualification.
  • Define part qualification plans including criticaltoquality (CTQ) features, inspection methods, and acceptance criteria
  • Support firstarticle inspection (FAI), rootcause analysis, and corrective actions for AM components that fail qualification or field requirements
  • Partner with Quality and Manufacturing Engineering to ensure AM designs meet reliability, cleanliness, and performance requirements for semiconductor capital equipment
  • Use build data, inspection results, and postprocessing feedback to correlate design features, build orientation, and process parameters with part quality and performance
  • Support R&D efforts to implement new AM materials and process combinations.
  • Contribute to internal DfAM training material, design guidelines, and best-known-method documents.

Qualifications:

B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or a related field and a minimum of 2 years of experience in metal additive manufacturing or a Master's degree with focus on AM is required. Experience in build preparation and setup (build files, support design, process parameters) is also required. Hands on experience with metal AM machines operation is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Design experience with AM materials and processes. Experience in specific design tools including SolidWorks, nTop, Magics is strongly preferred
  • Experience in product development/NPI with proven history of delivering practical, innovative solutions
  • Technical knowledge of all competency areas of metal L-PBF from Powder/ feedstock to post processing. Technical knowledge of other material classes (ceramics, polymers) and modalities is a plus
  • Ability to balance GD&T, surface finish, and material property requirements with AM process capabilities and production variability
  • Working knowledge of AM part qualification, inspection methods, and failure modes relevant to production hardware
  • Highly self-motivated and able to execute tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to tailor communication to senior leaders and across the organization on efforts, challenges, benefits, and successes
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts and results clearly
