Calspan's Tire Performance Testing team provides tire research and testing services. The unique capabilities of the laboratory are used to help innovators measure and understand tire performance and characteristics for all types of tires, including those used on automobiles, motorcycles, trucks, and aircraft; off-road; by the military; and in motorsports.
We are looking for a Applied Test Engineer to join our team!

This is a 3rd shift position.
Responsibilities
  • Translate high-level test objectives into shift-level execution protocols, setups, and acceptance criteria for the operations team. Guide technical decisions during shift testing and ensure execution strictly follows Test Engineer plans and engineering specifications. Monitor test parameters in real-time; exercise engineering judgment to adjust, pause, or continue tests within predefined limits to ensure data integrity and quality. Execute tests in a professional and timely manner, consistent with general laboratory practices.
  • Work closely with technicians and mechanics to set-up equipment, test articles, and facilities in order to prepare for and execute tests. Lead system-level troubleshooting for electrical, mechanical, control, or data acquisition issues during testing. Coordinate with Engineering and Operations teams to minimize downtime and maintain test continuity. Identify inefficiencies in setup, execution, or data handoff and propose engineering level process improvements.
  • Continuously monitor data acquisition systems during testing and perform engineering-level validation of sensor and data quality. Evaluate test deviations from engineering plans. Document non-conformances and assess impact on deliverables.
  • Serve as technical point of contact for off-shift test activities. Maintain accurate shift logs and reports. Ensure all documentation and data meets engineering standards. Communicate operational constraints and schedule risks to Engineering and Operations leaders. Facilitate alignment between Test Engineering objectives and off-shift execution capabilities. Participate in shift planning sessions to optimize test sequencing and resource allocation.

Qualifications
Preferred Education & Experience:
  • Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Technology or related discipline;
  • 3+ years in testing, quality, or manufacturing environment
  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to above

Preferred Knowledge / Ability:
  • Familiarity with experimental test methods
  • Understanding of complex systems including data acquisition, signal conditioning, instrumentation, and controls
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications
  • Understanding of project management concepts (metrics, tracking, etc.)
  • Ability to clearly communicate objectives to staff and customers
  • Familiarity with data science topics
  • Understanding of pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical systems
