Flying Probe Test and In-Circuit Test are both essential in electronics manufacturing. Flying Probe Test uses robotic probes to test PCBs without fixtures, ideal for small batches or prototypes. In-Circuit Test employs fixtures to quickly test multiple points simultaneously, suitable for high-volume production. Understanding their differences helps manufacturers choose the right testing method for quality assurance and efficiency.

Job Description

JOB TITLE: Flying Probe Test Technician

DEPARTMENT: Test Department

 REPORTING TO: Test Manager

PRIMARY FUNCTION OF POSITION:

The Flying Probe Test Technician uses design CAD data, the project Bill of Materials,
schematics, and the Test Software tools to generate complete test programs. The
Technician then does a full de-bug of the test program, referencing the board schematic.
Test Technicians provide Test Operators with test programs to load and run the boards
through flying probe test machines. Technicians constantly review the department
schedule, project schedule, and test machine availability to determine the most efficient
method to meet test complexity and schedule requirements.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

  • Review the project complexity, test machine schedule, and project schedule, and
determine the appropriate test platform for the project.
  • Generate test programs from CAD data, the project Bill of Materials, and schematic
    using the test machine software.
  • De-bug test programs using board schematics and component data sheets.
  • Review high-level errors found during the test phase, and perform appropriate test
    and board de-bug procedures.
  • May be responsible for supervising the department staff and assigning tasks in order
to meet schedules during periods when the Flying Probe Test Supervisor is
    unavailable.
  • Other duties as assigned.

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • 2-year degree (Associates) in Electronics or Electronics Technology from an accredited institution.
  • Must pass and maintain CIS certification for IPC-A-610 standard.
  • Specialized military training in electronics may be considered in lieu of the 2 year degree.
  • Minimum of 1-year experience in Flying Probe or In-Circuit test (ICT) program development.

 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequent lifting of 10 to 15 pounds, occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.
