What is New Product Introduction (NPI)?

New Product Introduction (NPI) is the process of bringing a new product from concept to market. It involves multiple phases, including design, prototyping, testing, manufacturing, and launch. The goal of NPI is to ensure that a product is developed efficiently, meets quality standards, and is introduced to customers on time. NPI professionals coordinate cross-functional teams, manage timelines, and address any issues that could impact successful product delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a New Product Introduction (NPI) role?

To thrive in a New Product Introduction (NPI) role, you need expertise in project management, supply chain processes, and manufacturing operations, often supported by a degree in engineering, business, or a related field. Familiarity with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software, ERP systems, and quality standards such as ISO 9001 is typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration skills set top performers apart. These abilities are vital for ensuring new products are launched efficiently, meeting quality standards, and achieving business objectives.

    Job Description:

    The Opportunity

Join Hitachi Energy as an Engineering Tools & Design Automation Engineer and help transform the way transformer components are designed, configured, and delivered. In this role, you'll serve as a key contributor to the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of engineering configuration tools, design automation systems, and digital engineering processes supporting our North America Transformer Components business.

You'll collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, product management, and IT teams to improve engineering efficiency, standardize design practices, and capture critical product knowledge in scalable digital solutions. Your work will directly support the design and manufacture of bushings, tap changers, fuses, switches, and other transformer components while enabling faster product development, greater consistency, and improved customer responsiveness.

This position offers a unique combination of engineering, software development, and continuous improvement responsibilities. Much of the role will focus on engineering tools and design automation, while also supporting Design to Value (DtV), product standardization, New Product Introduction (NPI), and continuous improvement initiatives that drive long-term business success.

    How You'll Make an Impact

    • Develop, maintain, and enhance engineering configurators, design automation tools, and digital engineering applications used across the transformer components portfolio.

    • Create and maintain product rules, calculations, configuration logic, engineering databases, templates, and automated workflows.

    • Collaborate with product experts to capture engineering knowledge and translate design requirements into scalable and maintainable digital solutions.

    • Improve engineering productivity through automation, standardization, digitalization, and process improvement initiatives.

    • Support the integration of engineering tools with CAD, PLM, ERP, and other enterprise systems.

    • Validate and test engineering applications to ensure accuracy, reliability, and alignment with product requirements.

    • Develop technical documentation, training materials, and user guides for engineering systems and processes.

    • Provide technical support and training to engineering teams utilizing design tools and configurators.

    • Support New Product Introduction (NPI) activities by deploying new products and engineering knowledge into configuration and automation systems.

    • Contribute to Design to Value (DtV) initiatives through product standardization, process optimization, and cost-reduction projects.

    • Drive continuous improvement of engineering processes, data quality, and design governance practices.

    • Stay current with emerging technologies in design automation, engineering software development, AI-enabled engineering tools, and digital engineering methodologies.

    • Support the development of long-term digital engineering roadmaps and best practices.

    • Responsible to ensure compliance with applicable external and internal regulations, procedures, and guidelines.

    Your Background

    • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

    • Experience developing, supporting, or enhancing engineering software tools, configurators, automation systems, or technical applications.

    • Experience working with CAD, PLM, ERP, product data management, or engineering configuration platforms.

    • Working knowledge of programming or scripting languages such as Python, C#, VBA, SQL, JavaScript, or similar technologies.

    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate engineering requirements into practical digital solutions.

    • Experience working with engineering calculations, product structures, configuration rules, technical specifications, or product development processes.

    • Ability to work effectively across engineering, manufacturing, IT, and business functions.

    • Strong communication and documentation skills.

    • Self-driven, collaborative, and results-oriented work style.

    • Preferred: experience with product configurators, design automation tools, CPQ systems, or rule-based engineering applications.

    • Preferred: experience with Creo, Windchill, SAP, or similar engineering platforms.

    • Preferred: experience supporting industrial products, power equipment, transformer components, or manufacturing environments.

    • Preferred: experience with Design to Value (DtV), Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, DFM/DFA, or continuous improvement methodologies.

    • Preferred: experience with database development, systems integration, reporting tools, or engineering data governance.
