New Grad Software information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a New Grad Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a New Grad Software Engineer, you need a solid grasp of computer science fundamentals, programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), and a relevant degree like a BS in Computer Science or related field. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), software development tools, and exposure to frameworks or cloud platforms are highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help new grads collaborate and adapt in team environments. These skills are crucial for quickly contributing to projects, growing professionally, and ensuring code quality within dynamic tech teams.

What types of projects can a New Grad Software Engineer expect to work on in their first year?

As a New Grad Software Engineer, you can expect to work on a variety of projects ranging from bug fixes and feature enhancements to participating in the development of new products or internal tools. Early assignments often focus on onboarding and familiarizing you with the codebase, tools, and development practices, while gradually increasing in complexity as you gain confidence. Collaboration with more experienced engineers, product managers, and quality assurance teams is common, providing opportunities to learn best practices and contribute to team goals. Many companies also encourage new grads to participate in code reviews and team meetings, helping you build both technical and communication skills.

Job description

PointOne

PointOne is reinventing how law firms operate. Our AI-powered timekeeper helps attorneys capture billable time automatically and provides rich insights that transform how legal work is managed. We're a venture-backed startup (Y Combinator, Bessemer, 8VC, General Catalyst) made up of software engineers (Jane Street, Google, Stanford, Princeton) and ex-attorneys. Following an excellent seed round and rapid customer adoption, we're adding two more software engineers before we raise our Series A.

Who You Are

You have:

  • Significant internship experience at hyper-growth startups and/or leading big tech companies
  • A CS degree from a top university
  • Strong product sense
  • High degree of ownership and the ability to operate autonomously

You're excited to work in-person, talk to customers, and build products that professionals rely on every day.

Why You Should Join

Growth: Work with founders and customers in person to define and build new features. You'll gain exposure to AI, serverless architecture, and the business of law while owning high-impact projects.

Impact: A lot of AI tools have trouble showing real impact. We're some of the stickiest tools in a law firm—and we deliver hard ROI to our customers. We're also a multi-product company, meaning that you would be expected to drive technical and product decisions.

Support: We're committed to building a supportive culture. Our rapidly growing and collaborative team values openness, high feedback, and continuous learning.

What You'll Do
  • Develop novel AI products, providing customers with entirely new workflows.
  • Work directly with customers (you'll be visiting their offices with us) to understand needs, prioritize requests, and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Prototype and integrate AI pipelines (e.g., retrieval-augmented generation) to prove out new workflows.
  • Lead by example through mentoring future hires, pairing, and code reviews. You'll shape our engineering culture.

We are currently only considering candidates that will have graduated by May 2026.
