What is a New Grad RN Residency?

A New Grad RN Residency program is a structured transition program designed to help newly graduated registered nurses move from the academic setting to professional clinical practice. These programs typically provide additional education, mentorship, and hands-on training to support new nurses during their first months on the job. The goal is to improve clinical skills, build confidence, and enhance patient care while reducing turnover among new nurses. Programs often last several months and include classroom learning, simulation, and supervised clinical experience.

To thrive in a New Grad RN Residency, you need a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), a valid RN license, and foundational clinical skills. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), basic life support (BLS) certification, and exposure to hospital protocols are typically required. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, resilience, and teamwork make new graduates stand out as they transition into professional practice.
