What is a new grad RN residency program?

A New Grad RN Residency Program is a structured training program designed to help newly graduated registered nurses transition from student to professional nurse. The goal is to improve retention, promote professional growth, and ensure safe, high-quality patient care. Most programs last several months and are offered by hospitals or healthcare systems.

New grad RN Residency Programs typically offer robust support through structured mentorship, preceptorship, and regular feedback sessions. Participants are paired with experienced nurses who guide them through clinical procedures, documentation, and patient care. These programs often include classroom instruction, skills labs, and group discussions to help new graduates transition smoothly into the professional environment. The collaborative structure encourages open communication, fosters confidence, and helps new nurses develop critical thinking skills essential for their role.
