  • Perform functional and parametric testing, debug hardware, and support product validation and certification activities.

Job description

Join Us as a Hardware Design Engineer!

Are you ready to make a significant impact in an innovative environment? At ORBCOMM, we're on the hunt for a passionate Hardware Design Engineer who thrives in a fast-paced, agile setting. If you're excited about designing next-generation industrial IoT devices and collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams to bring innovative products to market, we'd love to hear from you.

Why You'll Love Working Here

As a key member of our Hardware team, you will share responsibility for designing, validating, and testing ORBCOMM's industrial IoT devices and sensors. The Hardware team is a multidisciplinary, multi-site organization consisting of electrical design, PCB layout, industrial engineering, and documentation specialists who work closely with our Embedded Systems, Product Integrity, Manufacturing, and Software Engineering teams.

You'll contribute throughout the entire product lifecycle—from concept and design through validation, manufacturing, and product support—while helping deliver innovative satellite, cellular, BLE, and LoRa-enabled IoT solutions for customers around the world.

This role is based out of our Sterling, VA office and is full-time onsite. Working onsite provides the opportunity to collaborate closely with cross-functional engineering teams, participate in hands-on product development, and support laboratory testing and manufacturing activities.

What You'll Do

Hardware Design & Development

  • Design and develop satellite, cellular, BLE, and LoRa-enabled industrial IoT products.
  • Select electronic components and develop schematics for new hardware designs.
  • Support PCB layout activities and participate in schematic and PCB design reviews.
  • Create and maintain schematics, bills of materials (BOMs), and engineering documentation within ORBCOMM's product lifecycle management system.

Product Validation & Testing

  • Perform functional and parametric testing across industrial operating temperature ranges.
  • Conduct hardware debugging and root cause analysis to resolve design and manufacturing issues.
  • Prepare products for regulatory and industry certifications.
  • Participate in design verification activities and support test automation initiatives.

Product Lifecycle Support

  • Support new product introductions by partnering with Manufacturing and Supply Chain teams.
  • Provide engineering support for product installations, certification activities, and field deployments.
  • Customize standard hardware platforms to meet customer-specific requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to continuously improve product quality, reliability, and manufacturability.

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

  • Participate in design reviews and cross-functional engineering discussions.
  • Contribute to engineering best practices, documentation standards, and continuous process improvements.
  • Collaborate with Embedded Systems, Software Engineering, Product Integrity, Manufacturing, and Industrial Design teams throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Support innovation initiatives that improve ORBCOMM's industrial IoT product portfolio.

Who You Are

You're a collaborative engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and developing innovative hardware solutions. You have a passion for product development, strong analytical skills, and enjoy working in a hands-on engineering environment.

If you have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 3–5 years of experience in hardware design, electrical engineering, or a similar role.
  • Experience designing electronic hardware for embedded systems or industrial IoT products.
  • Experience with component selection, schematic capture, and PCB design review.
  • Hands-on hardware bench experience including soldering, debugging, and test automation.
  • Proficiency using electrical test equipment such as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and network analyzers.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail and time management.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Leverage AI-enabled tools and automation to support daily tasks and productivity.
  • Commitment to continuous learning in digital and AI literacy.

Then we want to meet you!
