Job description


Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The Charge Nurse is responsible for clinical supervision of patient care for all patients in the department and job performance supervision of all employees on an assigned shift in a Medical and/or Surgical department. Plans, coordinates and provides for optimum patient care on the unit. This includes managing schedules and patient assignments, delivering annual evaluations and counseling conversations, and providing direct patient care when relieving nurses. Maintains the Standards of Nursing Care and provides care in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act. Assures utilization of the nursing process based on research and evidence based outcomes. The Charge Nurse makes recommendations on hiring, department budgets, and trainings and serves as a leader in the department.
Outpatient Treatment Centers Infusion: In addition to the above, may be responsible for contacting Providers to either enter, sign or modify orders. Enters all orders into the EMR that are received via email, fax, or verbal then routes to Providers for signature. Calls to ensure first time patients have prescriptions, started any required medications, and answers questions related to chemotherapy treatment.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Charge Nurses at Magnet designated facilities only require a BSN. MSN preferred. Additional requirements for specific departments as follows:
  • Advanced Brain and Spine: Neurology and Neurosurgery telemetry experience preferred, including: stroke, seizure, brain tumor/surgery, Parkinson's, spinal surgery.
  • Acute Rehab: 3-5 years of acute clinical experience with one year in a rehabilitation setting preferred. One year supervisory experience, FIM training, CARF experience, and bilingual/multilingual preferred.
  • Cardiac Telemetry: Successful completion of Sub-Intensive, Intermediate, Progressive or Critical Care course/experience and ECG test required.
  • Gamma Knife: Successful completion of ECG test required. Previous telemetry experience preferred including: PACU, ED, ICU/CCU, GI Lab units.
  • GI Lab: Moderate Sedation experience required. Previous GI nursing experience preferred.
  • Gyn/Urol: Medical/Surgical, Gyn/Urology experience preferred.
  • Heart Vascular Institute: Experience in Cardiac Telemetry and successful completion of ECG test required.
  • Hoag Orthopedic Institute: Successful completion of ECG test required. Orthopedic nursing experience preferred. BSN preferred.
  • Ortho Surgery Center: Successful completion of ECG test required. Two years clinical/management experience preferred.
  • Outpatient Treatment Centers: For Oncology Infusion, 3 years Oncology Infusion experience required. For Non-Oncology, no experience required.
  • Radiation Oncology: Minimum of two years' experience in Radiation Oncology in an acute healthcare system environment and one year supervisory experience in an acute healthcare system environment.
  • HHNB Interventional Radiology, CT Scan, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Ultrasound, Main X-Ray: Interventional Radiology experience and previous experience in a supervisory role with proven leadership skills preferred.
  • Surgical - 6 West: Experience in SUB-ICU required.
  • Telemetry: Telemetry experience preferred.

  • Acute Rehab: CCRN required within 2 years in position.

  • Cardiac Telemetry: ACLS required. Fulfills mandatory stroke education requirements per certification agency.
  • Gamma Knife: ACLS required at hire. PALS Cert. required within 90 days of hire.
  • GI Lab: ACLS required. Heart Valve Clinic and CVOR: BLS and ACLS required upon hire. Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI): ACLS required.
  • Neuroscience Admin.: BLS and ACLS
  • Outpatient Treatment Centers Infusion: For Oncology Infusion, the Chemotherapy/biotherapy Cert. is required. ONSONC. Not required for Non-Oncology Infusion.
  • Ortho Surgery Center: Infection Prevention Cert. required within 12 months in position.
  • Oncology/Pulmonary/Sepsis: ACLS upon hire. Chemotherapy &
  • Oncology: ACLS upon hire. Chemotherapy & Immunotherapy Provider Card required to administer chemotherapy.
  • 1206d Oncology Specialty Clinic: BLS upon hire
  • Pulmonary/Sepsis: ACLS upon hire.
  • HHNB Interventional Radiology, CT Scan, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Ultrasound, Main X-Ray: ACLS certification is required. PALS certification is required within 6 months of hire/transfer to department. NIHSS certification is required within 30 days of hire/transfer to department. Completes annual stroke education per organization requirements.
  • PICC Services: ACLS certification is required.
  • HHI Main X-Ray: ACLS certification is required.
  • Surgical (5 West and 6 West): ACLS
  • Telemetry: ACLS.
  • Irvine Telemetry - ACLS; Fulfills mandatory stroke education requirements per certification agency. NIHSS certification required within six months of hire.
  • Irvine Medical - Oncology: ACLS upon hire, ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate Course (ONS- Oncology Nursing Society) required within six months of hire
  • Irvine Med Surg - Digestive: ACLS upon hire
  • Pacemaker & Arrhythmia Ctr: ACLS upon hire

  • Heart Vascular Institute: PCCN
  • Ortho Surgery Center: Ortho Surgery Center: Certification in specialty area (CNOR or CPIC)
  • Radiation Oncology: OCN Certification
  • HHNB Interventional Radiology, CT Scan, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Ultrasound, Main X-Ray: CRN (Certified Radiology Nurse) is preferred.
  • HHI Main X-Ray: PALS certification is preferred. CRN (Certified Radiology Nurse) is preferred.
