The Research Specialist will provide hands-on technical support for rodent studies, with a primary focus on animal handling, behavioral testing, injections, oral gavage, surgical assistance, post-operative monitoring, sample processing, and experimental data collection. Responsibilities will include assisting with rodent surgeries and perioperative workflows, administering treatments by injection and gavage, monitoring animals after surgery, performing behavioral assays related to pain-associated outcomes, processing and organizing biological samples, maintaining accurate animal and experimental records, coordinating study timelines, and ensuring compliance with DAR, IACUC, and laboratory safety protocols.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Under general supervision, performs a variety of defined research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules.
- Sets up experiments as prescribed by a principal investigator.
- May be required to participate in laboratory maintenance activities such as sterilization and cleaning of equipment, ordering of supplies, inventory and media preparation.
- Maintains records, files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer databases.
- Compiles data and records results of studies for publications, grants and seminar presentations.
- Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
- Performs related responsibilities as required by principal investigator.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in a scientific field OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in neuroscience, physiology, biomedical sciences, animal science, veterinary technology, or a related field, or equivalent veterinary/animal research experience.
- Prior rodent handling and animal research experience is strongly preferred.
- Experience with behavioral testing, injections, oral gavage, surgical assistance, post-operative monitoring, sample processing, or pain-related assays is preferred.
- Registered Veterinary Technician certification/licensure or equivalent veterinary technician experience is strongly desired.
- The ideal candidate will have excellent attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced research environment while also communicating effectively with the PI and research team.
NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
